TRA, HSR and MRT tickets in Taipei

Taipei City is the only city converging 3 types of trains as High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. All stations are below street level and underground linked. From Taipei Station, you can take the Taipei Metro (MRT), the High Speed Train (HSR), or slow trains (TRA) to different stations: Hualien, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Jiayi, Tainan as well as other districts.

The biggest train station in Taipei is called Taipei Railway Station 台北火車站, by the Taiwan Railway Administrationor Taipei Main Station. It is located in the old part of the city.

Taipei City is served by High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. The only location where all three types of trains converge is Taipei Main Station.

You can follow the directional signs posted along the way to walk through the underground linkways from Taipei Station (HSR) to Taipei Railway Station (TRA) and Taipei Main Station (MRT).

From Taipei Station, you can take the Taipei Metro (MRT), the High Speed Train (HSR), normal, or slow trains (TRA) to many stations: Hualien, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Jiayi, Tainan as well as other cities.

1. TRA tickets

Buy ticket online

Is it really necessary to book tickets in advance?

If you’re planning to go to Hualien on Fri, Sat or Sun, it’s advisable to book tickets in advance. For travelling on other days, it’s still good to book as it will give you a peace of mind. However, if you prefer flexibility in your schedule, you may choose to buy tickets directly from the train station.

Online booking is only opened 14 days in advance. You should book ticket as soon as possible because the tickets to Hualien station are always sold out quickly. Journey from Taipei Main station to Hualien station takes about 2 hour 10 minutes to 3 hours depending on type of train. Tickets cost NT $440 per pax.

1) Click on "Time Table" to check and choose date, time departure from Taipei to Hualien. You should write down train numbers, timing, cost of tickets on paper.

2) Click on "Online Booking", click to order tickets using train number and fill up form same as below. You will get Booking Codes.

3) Click on "Online Payment", if you want English, click on English at top row. Read instruction. After reading, click on check box to show that you understand condition. Then, click on "Start to buy tickets". Fill up Passport number and booking codes as given earlier. Fill in credit card detail.

You will get confirmation voucher. Use this voucher at TRA station to collect your train tickets at least 30 minutes before your departure train

Buy ticket at the counters

Tickets can be purchased from the TRA counter at Taipei Main Station (also at Breeze Centre). Normally, there is a super long queue at the counter. It may take time as you get there to buy tickets.

Tips:

  • It’s highly recommended to book tickets in advance. Especially during peak season.
  • There are different types of train serving the Taipei – Hualien route.
  • Try to choose the train that travels via mountain or coast line for beautiful scenery. You can get majestic mountains view along the journey.

2. HSR tickets

The HSR is the most favorable transit for travelers to cross the island due to its simplicity and speed.

Where to buy

There are several ways to purchase HSR tickets. Inside the stations, there are ticket vending machines with English language instructions and there are some usual counters buy directly.

Tickets can be bought from 7/11, Family Mart and other convenience stores. You can also buy them online from THSR’s Booking System, advance bookings can be purchased as early as 28 days from your preferred date. You need to provide your passport number and a phone number to purchase HSR ticket on the internet.

***Note:

  • If you buy tickets at the Taipei Main Stations, it’s very straightforward. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.
  • When you put your ticket into the machine to go to your platform, make sure to take it back as you'll need it at the final destination.

​​Taiwan High Speed Rail Trains leave every 20 minutes in both directions.

The table below shows the fare structure for tickets between all stations.

HSR Fare Table - Standard Car: Reserved Seat, Non-Reserved Seat.
In standard class, you also have the option of traveling in reserved or unreserved cars. Reserved Seat tickets have a seat number while Non-Reserved Seat tickets are discounted, and passengers are free to find a seat or stand in cars. Unreserved seat is a little cheaper compared to a full-priced ticket but you might be standing if all the seats are booked. All compartments are equipped with air-conditioning and restrooms. A snack cart makes its rounds throughout the train offering affordable snacks, beverages and lunch boxes.
