Mu Cang Chai is famous for the stretch of hazardous roads spreading out for tens kilometers of infinite and primeval landscapes, grandiose ranges of mountains and the peaceful and poetic picture of ethnics’ houses covered by terrace fields. Mu Cang Chai is located 180 kilometers away from Yen Bai city. You can take bus, train or motorbike to Mu Cang Chai from Ha noi. This guidance will show you how to get to Mu Cang Chai from Ha Noi.

1. Motorbike

If you are a backpacker, motorbike is a good option. There is a National Highway No.32 linking Lao Cai and National Highway No.37 connecting to Tuyen Quang. Yen Bai is a transit point for tourists going to Mu Cang Chai.

There are three ways to get to Yen Bai from Ha noi

  • After passing by SonTay, go over Trung ha bridge - Tam Nong. Then, go along Hong riverside and get to Van phu bridge in Yen Bai.
  • Thang Long bridge - highway No.12 - Phuc Yen - Viet Tri - Doan Hung. Then, go along highway No.70 to get to Yen Bai (the easiest and shortest way)
  • Thang Long bridge - Phuc Yen - Vinh Yen - LapThach- Son Duong - highway no.37 , Tuyen Quan - Yen Bai.

2. Public bus from Hanoi to Yen Bai

Distance Hanoi – Mu Cang Chai is 280km. The route condition is very bad so you have to take about 1 day to arrive by bus.

It's better to check your arrival day. You can buy tickets at My Dinh station (if you will start from Hanoi) or Sapa Bus station.
Hai Van bus line is very good, clean vehicle and especially it's a famous brand among other bus services.

Don't be in rush to book bus ticket in advance especially if you can't speak Vietnamese. Check in your Hanoi hotel then ask the help from hotel front desk. Surely they will help you make deals and book bus tickets easily 24 hours in advance. They will also show you how to get to My Dinh bus station. Remember Hai Van buses don't park inside the station. They're using a mini parking place outside.

Tip:

  • Make sure that you walk to the main building to buy ticket and avoid following any driver who convinces you to get on his vehicle.
  • Ask the driver to let you get off at Yen Bai bus station (Bến xe khách Yên Bái).
  • There are many hotels, guesthouses here and you can get the early bus to Mu Cang Chai.

3. Train from Hanoi to Yen Bai city and take bus to Mu Cang Chai town

The trains usually depart at night (7:40PM, 8:35PM, 9:10PM, 9:50PM) and arrive in Yen Bai train station in the early morning (4 - 5 hours).

Note:

  • Hanoi station has two gates. The main gate located at 120 Le Duan street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. This Gate is usually for South-bound train. And the Station B located at Tran Quy Cap street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi (usually for North train to Sapa, Yen Bai).
  • Train arrives Yen Bai in the early morning. It's advisable to wait until the late morning to walk around this area.

Bus from Yen Bai city to Mu Cang Chai Town

You should wake up early, around 4:30 AM as you need to have breakfast before getting on a local bus that departs at 5.30 AM to Mu Cang Chai Town.

Note: The bus will not stop for breakfast. Buses will pass by many tea plantations and the beautiful impressive Khau Pha pass.

  • Bus fare: 100,000VND.
  • Departure: in front of Yen Bai bus station (218 Tran Hung Dao St, Yen Bai).
  • Distance: 183km (6 - 7 hours).

Getting around Mu Cang Chai

  • Stay in Mu Cang Chai town. Rent a motorbike and start your journey. From the center of the town to Che Cu Nha, De Xu Phinh, La Pan Tan is just about 21km.
  • Motorbike for rent: 200,000 VND /day. Sometimes, you have to deposit 2,000,000 VND

Mu Cang Chai town - Lai Cai province - Sapa (Lao Cai province)

  • Every morning at 7:00 AM, there are some buses leaving in the center of Mu Cang Chai town to Lai Chau province and Sapa.
  • Most of the buses are in yellow colour.
  • Departure at 7:00 AM.
  • Arrive in Sapa about 1:00 PM
