Why Yokohama Stadium is special ?

Yokohama Stadium was built in 1978 as the first multi-purpose circular stadium that holds 30,000 spectators. Multi-purpose stadiums are rare even throughout the world. It is the home ground of the baseball team Yokohama Bay Stars, and is also used for American football games and live events. Portrait engravings of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are respectively placed by the left and right stand poles in commemoration that great major league baseball players such as Ruth and Gehrig played here.

I was very fortunate to catch a Yokohama Baystars game before the end of the season. Arrived via JR Line at Ishikawacho station. About a 5 min walk to the stadium. Ate lunch in Chinatown before the game. The Stadium- Very clean. Looks like it seats 25,000-30,000. From our seats we had a nice view of the city and a really tall Ferris wheel. The game watching experience: excellent! Really enjoyed the game. The Baystars have some hitters on their team. The player cheers/chants sang by their fans. Great views of the field. The balloons being launched. Chu-Hi and Beer sold at the seats (by cute ladies) so I can enjoy the game and not waste time standing in line. I also like that fans respect their stadium and clean their seating areas before they leave. That is something I wish was the standard in the US. I look forward to watching at least 1 game a month next season. Side note: got to meet and take a pic with Mashi Murikami, 1st Japanese player ever to play for a Major League team(San Francisco Giants).

If you like baseball but haven't seen the Japanese version of the game, you really should, and this open-air stadium in downtown Yokohama is as good a place to see it as any. Take JR Keihin Tohoku/Negishi line or the Yokohama City subway Blue Line to Kannai station, walk west and it is a block away. You will be surprised at the vigor of the Japanese game, with cheering sections that will remind you of college. Get your picture taken with Starman and perhaps even see the Baystars win for a change. FYI, Yokohama Stadium in downtown Yokohama is for baseball. For J League soccer, go to Nissan Stadium (aka International Stadium Yokohama) in the suburbs to the north, a 7 minute walk from Kotsukue station on the JR Yokohama line or about 12 minutes from Shin-Yokohama station if you are traveling by Shinkansen.

DeNA Baystars rule!! Tip: pay attn to where you buy your tickets. The bleacher seats are good but small so if you are tall or have a rump you might want to pay more for the better seats.
