Why Yangmingshan National Park is special ?
Yangmingshan National Park (Chinese: 陽明山國家公園; pinyin: Yángmíngshān Guójiā Gōngyuán) is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan, located between Taipei and New Taipei City. The districts that house parts of the park grounds include Taipei's Beitou and Shilin Districts; and New Taipei's Wanli, Jinshan and Sanzhi Districts. The National Park is famous for its cherry blossoms, hot springs, sulfur deposits, fumaroles, venomous snakes, and hiking trails, including Taiwan's tallest dormant volcano, Seven Star Mountain (1,120 m).
This mountain range was originally called Grass Mountain (草山; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chháu-soaⁿ) during the Qing Dynasty, in reference to Datun Mountain (大屯山; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tōa-tūn-soaⁿ). Officials during this period were worried about thieves stealing sulfur from the rich sulfur deposits in the area so they would regularly set fire to the mountain. Thus, only grass and not trees could be seen.
What to explore at Yangmingshan National Park?
Datun Nature Park is located at the northwest foot of Mt. Datun next to the 101A county highway (Bailaka Highway). The nature park is about 800 meters above sea level and has been restored using revegetation methods. It is known for its warm-temperate climate, broad-leaved forest, and volcanic cone.
In addition to the plant, animal and insect specimens on site, the Datun Visitor Center hosts an exhibition hall dedicated to early human activity in the Yangmingshan area, in particular the local indigo industry. Although the exhibition hall is relatively small, it is ingeniously designed to allow visitors to sit in front of the hall's large French windows and look out over the pristine lake, misty mountains, ancient trees, and open sky.
As you stroll along forest pathways, keep your eyes open for insects such as the unicorn beetle, stag beetle, metallicboring beetl and click beetle, and Yangmingshan's unique Dicranocephalus bourgoini as well as the preying man-tises, katydids, crickets, grasshoppers and stick insects to be seen on every side. In summertime the constant chirping of insects in the forest makes a wonderful natural music.
Enjoying a good soak in a steaming, silky-smooth hot spring set amid beautiful natural scenery is one of life's greatest pleasures.
Qingtiangang is a lava terrace formed when the lava from Mt. Zhugao flowed north after its eruption. Because of its flat terrain, a ranch was established and the area was used as a pasture for grazing cattle during the Japanese occupation. The grassland is currently made up mainly of carpet grass and crenate-leaved eureya.

Tips for you
Visited this place on 21 Sept 2015. We took bus R5 from Jiantan MRT station, alight at the last stop and changed to the Shuttle Tour Bus 108 to visit the various spot at Yang Ming Shan. The bus ride is bumpy and the bus display are faulty that day, so it is best to tell the driver the destination that you are alighting, he/she will help to direct. There are many visit spots on the entire Yang Ming Shan and we did our homework prior our visit. Since we only plan to spend our morning there, we visited: (1) Xiao You Keng (小油坑) - Sulphur Fumaroles (2) Leng Shui Keng (冷水坑) - Free Hot Spring Foot Spa (3) Qing Tian Gang (擎天冈) - Foggy Cow Farm Be prepare to walk a lot and bring along some snacks. We seen locals having picnic there. Our entire morning visit to Yang Ming Shan is tiring but fun and we love the cool and foggy weather up there. We will return again someday to visit the other stops.
So I went there alone and with no car and I felt that the place is actually quite big. You probably want to dedicate a full day here or may be come 2 or 3 times to spread the exercise. If you go alone then I do recommend that you check your maps online as the local maps could be a bit hard to understand. You can take the bus around the park so that you can visit different locations. May be the only ploblem would be that scheduled times may vary and you might waste a bit of time just waiting. Other than that, great hike. Please carry plenty of water as it is a long walk to the top!
Walk the track from visitor centre to the summit back down to the sulphur pit on the other side! From there you can catch a minibus back to the centre. Amazing views!
