Why Wisdom Path is special ?
The Wisdom Path is formerly known as the Heart Sutra Inscription. In June 2002, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region received the donation of an original calligraphy featuring the "Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra" (Heart Sutra) from Professor Jao Tsung-I, an internationally renowned master with outstanding achievements in both academic research and art, who wished to have the calligraphy transformed into an outdoor large-scale carving. The masterpiece is reproduced in the form of a large-scale outdoor wood inscription on a natural slope at the foot of Lantau Peak near Ngong Ping of Lantau Island. The tranquillity of the natural environment of the site would enable visitors to appreciate the masterpiece which combines art and philosophy. The project was completed in May 2005.
What to explore at Wisdom Path?
Wisdom Path traces a series of 38 wooden steles (upright monuments) containing verses from the centuries-old Heart Sutra; one of the world’s best-known prayers revered by Confucians, Buddhists and Taoists alike. These steles display the Chinese version of the prayer, based on the calligraphy of famous contemporary scholar Professor Jao Tsung-I, and are arranged in a ∞ pattern, which represents infinity.
Set in the hills of Ngong Ping and a short walk from the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, Wisdom Path also offers soothing eyefuls of the South China Sea. It’s a very scenic walk of about 15mins that will bring you deep into the trail to reveal a mountain scenery of peace and tranquility.
