Why Water Buffalo Market is special ?
Water Buffalo Market is a highly unusual and thoroughly Thai experience for a Saturday morning. A true farmers market that started 60 years ago as a weekly gathering of growers and traders, Tung Fha Bod has now become one of the largest weekend markets in Northern Thailand. Located in central Sanpatong on Hang Dong Road, about 30 km south of Chiang Mai city, the market opens quite early (around 5 a.m.) and ends by noon, so it’s best to arrive by 7 to catch the best deals and witness the farmers in action.
What to explore at Water Buffalo Market?
Coming from Chiang Mai and arriving at the market which straddles both sides of the road, there is ample parking on the left side although the entrance to the parking is not so easy to notice. The buffalo market is only on the right side but take the time to walk around and see whats going on, what is a available and taste a few things. Food, plants and interesting objects of some peoples' daily use.
Nearby there are also fighting cocks in cages and, closer to the road, lots of produce, some fearsome looking agricultural implements, and all sorts of bits and pieces. It's not really a place for crafts, souvenirs, etc., and is primarily a market for the local people. However, right next to the road there are plenty of stalls to buy a snack and on the other side there's at least one stall where you can get a good cup of coffee.
- Local market away from the tourists
- A fascinating glimpse of rural Thailand
- Vibrant Saturday market
- Great experience
- Great place for family days out.

The Sanpatong Buffalo market is well worth a visit when touring with other destinations in mind. I found an hour or so at the market to be fun and interesting. Not so far from the market is the Mae Wang valley with rafting, elephants and fun places to eat.
