Why Viharamahadevi Park is special ?
Viharamahadevi Park or formally known as the Victoria park is the largest, oldest and most colorful park situated in the heart of Colombo (Cinnamon Gardens), just opposite the colonial style Town Hall building. The park was built during the British rule of Sri Lanka as Victoria Park and remained as Vihara Maha Devi Park, in honor of a famous historical Sinhalese queen, mother of the hero of the nation, King Dutugamunu.
This is the largest & most attractive greenery in Colombo and best visited from March to May before the monsoon when most of the flowers are in full bloom.
What to explore at Viharamahadevi Park?
It has well landscaped gardens with a varity of trees, flowers, lotus ponds, fountains, golden image of Buddha, large Statue of Queen Viharamahadevi, and Queen Victoria. On the southeastern side of the park is a special section for children with a small train, a zoo of baby animals, mini aquarium and an amusement park. You will also get to see the elephants from the temple near Beira Lake who are often kept in the park to graze.
The park is a perfect place to relax, for shady walks, picnics and most of all a great place to spend your time with your family.
How to get to Viharamahadevi Park?
Ideal for short journeys within towns and cities, and for short excursions, the country’s many trishaws would be happy to offer you a ride. The vehicles are mainly Indian-made Bajaj rickshaws. Most trishaws are not metered. Always agree on a fare beforehand. Most drivers offer a decent fare, charging approximately Rs. 50 per kilometre.

Colombo’s biggest park was originally called Victoria Park but was renamed in the 1950s after the mother of King Dutugemunu. It’s notable for its superb flowering trees, which bloom in March, April and early May. Elephants used for ceremonies sometimes spend the night in the park, chomping on palm branches. It has been given a major sprucing up and now boasts new benches (often occupied with caressing couples), walkways, landscaping and playgrounds.
Much needed greenery right in the middle of the city. Great for an evening with a loved one or to enjoy with the family. Features a kids play area as well. Biking /Jogging paths available.
