Why University of Santo Tomas is special ?

The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines, or simply the University of Santo Tomas (UST), is a private, Roman Catholic research university in Manila, Philippines. Founded on April 28, 1611 by Miguel de Benavides, Archbishop of Manila, it has the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines and in Asia, and is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment found on one campus. Run by the Order of Preachers, UST is also the largest university in Manila.

UST is the only university to have been visited by three popes four times: once by Pope Paul VI on November 28, 1970, twice by Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981 and January 13, 1995, and once by Pope Francis on January 18, 2015. The patron of the university is St. Thomas Aquinas, while St. Catherine of Alexandria is the patroness.

What to explore at University of Santo Tomas?

The University of Santo Tomas is composed of various autonomous colleges, faculties, institutes and schools. Each of the University of Santo Tomas' numerous divisions award undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, together with basic education units. Tomas will surely add to your knowledge and photographic collection of interesting architectural and historical structures that are found in Manila, as the university has also produced prominent figures which include Filipino heroes, presidents and saints.

How to get to University of Santo Tomas?

Commuting from areas such as Marikina, Cubao, and Katipunan can roughly take about 1-1.5 hours, depending on how far you'll be coming from and how heavy the traffic is.

To commute from Marikina (since this is the farthest of the three mentioned above), you can follow the route:

1. Ride a Jeepney that passes through the LRT Katipunan Station (LRT 2: Santolan to Recto).

2. From Katipunan (or Santolan) Station, ride the LRT to Legarda Station.

3. Directly outside the Legarda Station, you will find tricycles waiting for passengers to UST. During the first day of summer, they charge 20 php/ head. On school days, it's only 10 php/head.

4. You'll be dropped on the road side across UST, either take the overpass or cross the pedestrian to reach your destination.

There's an old Urban Legend that says you must never go out of the Arch of the Centuries until after the Baccalaureate Mass. Otherwise, you might see where Benavides was pointing to.

I like the school because it's historical. I disliked in the school that when it rains, the school was in flood.

i've lived most of my waking hours here in this University for I work here. The feeling of old fashioned buildings as preserved from the spanish regime with some new modern buildings gives one a feeling of being in the center of the past & the present. Seeing the many students all over the place puts you in the mood of being young again. A must see place especially the Museum and and the Chapel.

I love the campus of the university of sto. tomas. I used to attend mass here whenever i can and would visit the my sister studying in the campus. The campus is huge and its quite tiring if you walk from the espana entrance and then exit the dapitan area. Easy access to all points as jeeps pass by all sides of the campus. The church is at center of the university, surrounded by buildings of different colleges. The ancient arch of the centuries will greet you upon entering the main gates, and its a welcoming site knowing that such structure is actually preserved from the original campus of ust in intramuros. They also have a hospital facility inside manned by their college f medicine and surgery. One thing to keep in mind, this area is known for its constant flood-problem so during the rainy season or if theres a heavy downpour prepare yourself to brave the flooded streets that will submerge the area.
