Why Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Deck is special ?

Completed in 1991 in Shinjuku's skyscraper district, the 243 meter tall Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Tocho) houses two observation decks, one in each of its towers. The free observation decks are located on the 45th floor of their respective towers and offer views from 202 meters above the ground. From the Tocho it is possible to see Mt. Fuji (when the weather is fine), Roppongi Hills, Shinjuku Gyoen, the skyscrapers of Nishi-Shinjuku; Tokyo Bay, Tokyo Dome, Tokyo Gate Bridge, Tokyo Tower;, Tokyo Skytree, Yoyogi park (with Meiji Jingu) and so many famous skyscrapers in the city I won’t even venture to name them at all!

What to explore at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Deck?

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings have become the face of the West Side of Shinjuku Station. You can see all of Tokyo from the popular 202-meter high observation decks, located on the 45th floor of Main Building No. 1. We recommend the South Observation Deck during the day, as you can see toward the popular Odaiba entertainment district. There is also a café where you can get light snacks. The North Observation Deck, which is open until 10:30 p.m., is great for enjoying Tokyo at night, complete with drinks at the deck's café and bar, where a variety of alcoholic drinks are available.

The Metropolitan building has two towers where you can gain free access to the 45th floor for sweeping views of Tokyo. To the west you can see Fujisan and to the east you can see Tokyo. There's city in all directions as far as you can see.... Kinda crazy!! The north tower has a restaurant and several gift shops, the south tower is much simpler. In the spring you won't be able to see much- the sands from China sweep in and everything is hazy, summer is hit or miss but visibility is usually low- the best time to see Fujisan is on a cold, sunny winter day!

We were expecting a great view from the Observation Deck but it was a disappointment. It was so hot up there that we couldn't wait to go back down. In addition, most of the deck was taken up by shops and a restaurant. We had a better view from a restaurant we visited across the street. While it is free, there are other free ones that are better.

There are two observatories in this building. I saw the whole Tokyo and Mount Fuji. The best part of these observatories is FREE OF CHARGE!!!!!
