Why The Sambisari Temple is special ?
The Sambisari temple was accidentally discovered in July 1966 by a farmer when working on land that belongs to Karyowinangun. His hoe hit the carved stone which was a part of the buried temple ruins. The news of discovery reached the Archaeology office in Prambanan and the area was secured. The excavation and reconstruction works was completed in March 1987. The temple is thought to have been buried by an eruption of volcanic ash from the nearby Mount Merapi.
The discovery of Sambisari temple probably was the most exciting archaeological findings in Yogyakarta in recent years, leading to speculation about whether there are other ancient temples still underground in the vicinity, buried under Mount Merapi volcanic ash.

What to explore at The Sambisari Temple?
The complex of Sambisari temple consists of 1 main temple and 3 supporting temples. The main temple building is unique since it does not have shoe basement like other temples in Java. At the same time, the foot of the temple functions as the foundation to make the temple even on the ground. Go to westwards, you will be able to see the three supporting temples (perwara) standing in the opposite direction.
When you have been satisfied with enjoying the beauty of the temple, you may leave for the information room. Some photographs featuring the rice field owned by Mr. Karyowinangun before the excavation and the early condition of the temple at the early time of the discovery. There are also photographs of the excavation processes and the temple reconstruction that lasted for tens of years, including the photographs of other goods such as bronze statues found during the excavation that are kept in Building of Archeological Heritance Preservation.
The beauty of Sambisari temple that you can enjoy at present time is the result of hard works of the archeologists for 21 years. The temple that initially looked like a giant puzzle was reconstructed piece by piece for the continuation of one more heritance of the great culture in the past.

Tips for you
Reviews
Free entrance, ample parking. It's a nice landscape temple below the level of the soil surface and located not far from the Prambanan temple.
For those of you who want to say that they have seen an interesting and intellectually not too demanding historical monument while visiting Indonesia this is the place for you. PROS: Easy to get to since it is on a side road just beyond Yogyakarta airport on the road to Prambanan temple complex. You drive out of the airport, take a right and then the first major road to your left and then proceed for 2-3 kilometres. You can't miss it as the road narrows considerably at the end and follows the contours of the complex. FREE! You only pay on Indonesian holidays according to the temple security guards. So no need to whinge about paying RP 250'000 for non-KITAS or non-KTP holders which includes most of you 'bules'. Easy to park you car or motorcycle or bicycle near/next to the entrance. Interesting and evocative Linga and Yoni statues are strewn around the inside complex. This is not evident in any other temple complex, as far as I know, in the Yogyakarta region. CONS: No place to have a decent bite to eat or drink in/next to the complex. No one to tell you anything about the history or otherwise of this place or the stage of the excavation works as it seems that this complex is part of something far far bigger!
