Why The Empire restaurant is special ?

The restaurant serves Khmer food geared to western tastes with quality wine, beer and great cocktails. Come and enjoy the movies, along with fabulous food and drinks to match in their air conditioned movie theater. Drinks and great snacks and delicious food can be ordered and served to you during movies. The menu gives very good value for money

Must try dishes:

The Empire Curry, the dish features beef, chicken or fish, eggplant, green beans, potatoes, fresh coconut milk, lemongrass and kroeung. It ($5) is served up in a big clay pot and should satisfy the hungriest stomach. Even better, the daily specials take the meals into the crazy good value zone, with Mad Monday providing a 50% discount on a nominated dish.

Soups and salads You will like the recommendations of wine to accompany each Khmer menu item, and the Soups and salads selection of local alongside the mains.

Ice-cream and lime mint: to completely finish your meal. If you’re not a wine drinker, invite the lime mint cooler to have a little party in your mouth.

How to get to The Empire restaurant?

Full address is: No.34, St. 130 (‘Khemarak Phnom’), near corner St. 5 (1 block from Riverside Blvd), Daun Penh, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Please note that if using Tuk Tuk’s or other transport in Phnom Penh they often struggle with reading maps and following street numbers. As Cambodian’s tend to navigate by landmarks we would recommend asking for ‘Psar Kandal’ (Kandal Market) or ‘Mwat Ton-lay’ (Riverside) and using the map to navigate your own way to the restaurant.

The Empire hosts a weekly meetup for couchsurfing travellers. Fairly small inside with a small outside seating area. The food is good but a little pricey. The cinema upstairs is small but comfortable and they'll bring drinks and food up from the bar if requested.

Great hog dog, very friendly staff. Didn't use the movie theater though. But the food was really good. The staff recommended the fish and chips. It's good to know that the waitress knows the dishes well enough to recommend it. Most places here don't do so.

Having lived in Phnom Penh for close to a year a few years ago, I had my share of Khmer red curries around town. You know, the orange kind served either with fresh rice noodles or with white bread. I liked the one served by an old woman in the Russian market (I wonder if she's still there), but I always thought the red curry at Romdeng was the best in town. When I came back to Phnom Penh this spring (after too many years), I tried out The Empire following a recommendation from a friend. And it turns out that their curry clearly is the best, even better than Romdeng and well worth the extra dollar compared to other places. The friend I was with tried their signature "Empire Curry", which was really good as well, but I preferred my Khmer Red Curry. Looking forward to eating it again when I come back to Phnom Penh!
