Why The Citadel is special ?

The Citadel Complex of Hue, set up by Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, is now one amongst the relics of the Hue ancient Capital – the World Cultural Heritage, capturing much of tourists’ attention.

The grounds of the Imperial City are protected by fortified ramparts 2 kilometers by 2 kilometers, and ringed by a moat. The water in the moat is routed from the Huong River (Perfume River) through a series of sluice gates. This enclosure is the Citadel (Kinh thành). Inside the Citadel is the Imperial City (Hoàng thành), with a perimeter wall some 2.5 kilometers inlength. Within the Imperial City is the Purple Forbidden City (Tử cấm thành), a term similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing. Access to the innermost enclosure is restricted to the Nguyễn imperial family.

What to explore at The Citadel?

The citadel palace complex is located on the North bank of Huong River (Perfume River), inside Hue city. It is a huge complex comprising three circles of ramparts, Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). Tourists can get access to the Imperial Citadel through four entrance gates. ow we get further into the second circle, the Hoang Thanh (Royal citadel), also the most important part of the Citadel. In the past, Ngo Mon Gate was only reserved for the King. Passing through Hoang Thanh, we enter Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). The whole site consists of 50 architectural constructions of different sizes and 7 gates for facilitating the entrance and exit. Dai Cung Mon (the Great Palace Gate) is in the front side, only reserved for the Kings.

Should you ever come inside the citadel, taking a look into the special feudal relics of immense architectural and cultural values, you will surely more or less love the traditional and classical side of Vietnam. As time goes by, thousands of changes have occurred, the precious historical and classical beauty of the nation would never be gone.

How to get to The Citadel?

Walking: If you are in Thanh Noi Hotel, you will go straight on Dang Dung Street and turn right on Dinh Tien Hoang Street. Then you turn right on Hai Muoi Thang Ba Street to come to The Imperial City.

Definitely a must visit place...restorations are still ongoing, but considering how intensive this place was bombed during the war, very impressive...do not miss it! There is an exit all the way in the back, saves a long walk back to the front (unless your bus or group is waiting at the front of course)...entrance fee is 105.000 dong
