Why The Chai Lai Orchid Nature Bungalows & Eco Resort is special ?
The Chai Lai Orchid is not only a resort, they are a social business that works to promote sustainable tourism, kindness to elephants and helping at-risk women take the first step to get out of poverty and see a future of hope.
Spend your days bathing, feeding, riding and playing with elephants. Get to know these gentle guardians of the forests and see why they need our help being rescued from chair tours. Stay in an eco-hut, raft down the river, and cool off swimming in the river. Eat fresh fruit from the tree and absorb the simple pleasure of a hammock in the mountain sun. Hike the endless trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls, secluded streams and Karen hill tribe villages.
How to get to The Chai Lai Orchid Nature Bungalows & Eco Resort?
The Chai Lai Orchid is located about an hour drive (55km) from Chiang Mai up in the mountains at km 16.
Take 108 to Sanpatong and turn right opposite Kasikorn bank. Drive past Ban Kad through Mea Wang and stay right at the fork in the road. After about 15 minutes, you will start to see signs for elephants and bamboo rafting. You will come across a large cluster of roadside stalls, at the end of the stalls look for the sign for the Elephant Camp (or ask for Baan Chang Lumpan elephant farm) and Chai Lai Orchid is on the left side of the street.

Tips for you
If planning to ride elephants or trek to Karen villages - start here. Simple, but welcoming accommodation with plenty to explore. Alternatively sit by the river & watch elephants trundle on by. Enjoy.
The best part about Chai Lai Orchid is their mission statement: the organization is devoted to the proper treatment and care of the elephants. They only allow visitors to bare-back ride the elephants (a much more humane method than riding on a chair with chains...), which to be honest is much more fun and exciting than sitting in a chair while a guide directs you around. You are the elephant's guide - you direct it, verbalize Thai commands, and bond with it. The guides clearly have an amazing relationship with the elephants, especially little Dee Dee. The rooms are nice - they come complete with a large fan and bug nets over the beds. It was a warm stay in late May, but the experience with the elephants and the mission of Chai Lai were worth every minute and every penny.
Chai Lai Orchid is a chill place quiet for the most part you have small cafe where you get wifi the food is really great try the fried red snapper and the red curry. The rooms are great better than most hostels I have stayed at. Our host Alexa is was a great host with a kind heart and goals to help other. The main reason for chai lai is to help woman who have been through abuse. They help teach them english and help them get back into society. She also helps elephants that go through abuse as she rents them out for the day and let them relax. Don't be afraid if the elephants are chained this is done for the elephants safety as they may wander off and get hurt by people. We spent one night there and had a great convo with alexa will definitely be volunteering there in the near future.
