CA TRU Hanoi ... A Vietnamese Traditional Music Concert; this is a world intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO - CA TRU. We attended the concert on July 19 th which was an intimate gathering of about 8 guests who thoroughly enjoyed the music and dance and explanations of such. It helped us to better understand the music and the history of it. The musicians presented poems through song with lyrics, melody and three traditional instruments; Dan day, drum and phach. There was plenty of opportunity to engage the artists and ask questions. You even had a chance to try the instruments! A beautiful way to immerse yourself in Vietnamese traditional culture. Music is endless however we need to take part in it and listen so that this great music is not lost. Highly recommended!!
I wasn't planning on watching the show when we went to Hanoi as I wasn't sure I'd enjoy listening to songs in a language I couldn't understand. We happened to pass by the venue of the Ca Tru performance at the oldest house on Ma May St. when we took the electric car tour. I was intrigued when I saw the old house and felt the urge to imbibe more of old Vietnam by watching the show and were well rewarded by an evening of ancient Ca Tru music. A narrator explains the history of Ca Tru and content of the songs in English for better understanding by the audience. Experiencing Ca Tru is highly recommended for those wanting to learn more about Vietnamese culture. In fact, don't miss it when you're in Hanoi.
Feel like coming back to the old time. I was happy that they can keep the fire for our intangible heritage. It such a waste if we lost the source of Ca Tru singer. Should definitly go there. My husband could even try the drum ( me too) they taught us how to hit the drum of Ca Tru correctly. They tried to explain in English for my husband too. I would definitely come back each time I'll be in Ha Noi with my husband again. He is not Vietnamese, but he said he really loves it.
