Why Teatro de Pedro V (Dom Pedro V Theatre) is special ?

Dom Pedro V Theatre is deemed as the first western theatre in China. It was built, in the year of 1860 by Portuguese in Macau, in honour of theatre was Portuguese king Pedro V. Originally, only the main part was constructed, and it was in 1873 that colonnades, arcades and the triangle lintel were added. In effect, the architecture contains not only a theatre, but also a ballroom, billiard parlor, reading room and the like. It used to be the auditorium and gathering venue of Portuguese living in Macau, but due to the destruction from termites, Dom Pedro V Theatre had not been open to the public until the year of 1993. After renovation in 1993 and 2001, the main body remains intact. In 2005, it was listed as a part of Historic Centre of Macau into the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

What to explore at Teatro de Pedro V (Dom Pedro V Theatre)?

The debut of Madama Butterfly in Asia was put on stage in Dom Pedro V Theatre, making it praised far and wide. During the World War II, it acted as the sanctuary for refugees.

The Dom Pedro V Theatre Macau is designed in a neo-classic design and its rectilinear plan incorporates a portico front. The top part of the theatre’s facade is made of triangular pediment and it finds its support of four sets of iconic columns. It also has three archways, with each archway measuring three meters wide by six meters high and rise on pedestals. It rests on granite steps. There is ornamentation on the green stucco façade, which is relatively restrained and its arches have festoons above them. The flames, which are accentuated in white plaster, are surrounded by simple floral patterns. Similarly, the architrave and cornice mouldings are highlighted in white, which is a great contrast to the building.

Features available ballroom, snooker room and library in order to create the glitterati’s entertainment. Attachment of a public restaurant. Large entrance hall that has elegant chandelier and red velvet curtains.

This historical building is next to the St Augustine Square standing on the top of a small hill. It is the oldest European Theatre in Macau. It is open to public from 10:00 to 18:00 except when there is a concert. Dom Pedro V Theatre is the best place to enjoy a concert in my experience because it is a small & nice building that you can have close association with the artists. Come and enjoy a concert here and I am sure it will be an unforgettable experience.

We had tickets to this theater to hear the Macau Chinese Orchestra. The theatre is in a beautiful historic building on the edge of the hill. At night, with the trees lit up from underneath, it is easy to imagine that you have somehow gone back in time. The interior of the theatre is very small, which adds to the charm.
