Tips for you
Tam Coc Garden is located about a 10 minute bike ride from the central tourist road of Ninh Binh. With only 16 guest rooms, you are in complete isolation. Rooms have small terraces that look out onto rice fields and the hills. I traveled here from Hanoi, where I live, and it felt like I had gone back in time to a place where people farm rice by hand in the clean air. Absolutely gorgeous and stunning. The rooms are small but peaceful and very well appointed, with excellent bathrooms (although the tubs are quite small if you're a tall person). There are no other hotels nearby, you are basically in a garden surrounded by rice fields and hills. The staff here is outstanding. They speak English and French and are extremely kind and caring. They are quick to serve and knowledgable about the area. Absolutely great people here. The hotel has bikes (albeit a bit run down) that you can use for free to travel around Ninh Binh. There are temples within reach, the bird sanctuary is nearby, and there is also a boat launch just a few hundred meters from the hotel road, so it is quite convenient indeed. I absolutely would recommend this place for a getaway from the city, it was extremely relaxing. The restaurant isn't bad at all. If you are used to Vietnamese food it's not the best (since it is catering to Westerners) but the staff are extremely generous with their house wine pours (a nice Australian syrah). Once night sets in there's not really anywhere to go, you basically are just at the hotel, there's nothing around. But that's Ninh Binh for you--rural, bucolic, serenity! Whoever did the landscaping here deserves a medal. Stunning gardens.
As beautiful as the pictures and the most hospitable staff. Great food too. Some other reviewers complained about the sounds of crowing roosters but I just found that part of the charm (just bring some earplugs if you want to sleep in!!). Pleasantly surprised that despite the location and so many gorgeous plants I didn't notice any bugs. Bikes were in good condition and perfect for our daytime activities. Hope to be back one day!!
