Why Sunshine International Aquarium is special ?
The Sunshine Aquarium exhibits creatures from seas, oceans and tropical forests around the world, including stingrays, sunfish, frogs, snakes, penguins, seals and otters. Located on the 10th floor of the World Import Mart Building in the Sunshine City complex, the aquarium was recently renovated and reopened in summer 2011.
On offer are some excellent exhibits including a tank holding 120 tons of water into which a diver drops to feed the fish every hour on the half hour from 10:30 - 17:30. There is a performing seals show at 11:45, 13:45, 14:45 and 15:45 with an extra show scheduled at 12:45 on Sundays and Holidays.
The immensely huge, deep water spider crabs from Izu bay are particularly impressive. Also on view is a collection of frogs as well as a few animals that are not really water dwellers, such as toucans, flamingos, snails, iguanas, and, just for fun, a couple of snakes. There is also a special exhibit of fish and other animals found in Cuba. A few jellyfish viewed under special lighting take on the aura of fairy tale creatures. On Mondays in particular (if not during school holidays), there seem to be the lowest numbers of visitors allowing a relatively calm visit.
What to explore at Sunshine International Aquarium?
Get into the aquarium, you can see many kinds of fishes and children will play with water and lights.
There are many attractions that are enjoyable and exciting, such as the octopus, various breeds of jellyfish and baby sharks that are still waiting to be hatched. There are also very cute baby cuttlefish that change colour. There are many shows, such as the sea lion show, a diver show where a diver goes and interacts with the sharks and stingrays, and many feedings, such as otter, penguin and pelican.

Tips for you
Best place to entertain kids.
While in Tokyo we planned to go to the Shinagawa aquarium; but it was closed for renovation so we headed to Sunshine Aquarium. It was about a 30 minute walk from the Ikebukuro JR Yamanote Green line station. Once you arrive at Sunshine City it is challenging to find the aquarium. There are multiple signs with arrows indicating Sunshine Aquarium but then its a dead end. There are no signs continuously leading you to the aquarium. We finally asked a store clerk for directions. He walked us to the elevator and instructed us to go to the first floor. Turns out that the aquarium is on the rooftop but to get there, you either walk up 9 floors of stairs or take the elevator; since it is so crowded, you have to enter the elevator on the first floor to even get on it. Admission was 2000 yen. exhibits are beautiful but it was hard to view all the exhibits fully because its so crowded that you can't appreciate a full view. We caught a glimpse of the sea lions performing. We did not realize that there was a second floor until after we left the aquarium - apparently the second floor is called waterfront journey which includes a mangrove forest, lake seals, streams, etc. There could be better English signage to offer directions. They also have gift shop - cute sea life souvenirs but pricey.
