Why Sunday Walking Street is special ?
The Sunday Walking Street serves as a venue for all kinds of local events, from dance recitals to beauty pageants and the sois (lanes) on either side of the main road feature stages and performance spaces. It starts at ThaPae Gate and runs all along Ratchadamnoen Rd, for around one kilometre. As the name suggests it takes place every Sunday from 16:00 until around midnight. The road is closed to traffic during this time, and as one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, it does get busy.

What to explore at Sunday Walking Street?
The items on offer lean more towards handcrafted products rather than the variety of mass produced brick-a-brack on display at the night bazaar, although there are plenty of hill-tribe vendors peddling the usual assortment of tourist trinkets. Remember that friendly bargaining is acceptable, especially if buying more than one product from a stall.
Temples on either side of the road become food courts where you can sample everything from fried rice to deep-fried crickets and there are tons of refreshment stalls set up along the road. The fresh fruit juice stands are a real treat and the kid in you will be delighted with a pancake on a stick, complete with a depiction of your favourite cartoon character, lovingly rendered in jelly.
With so much to see (and buy) at the weekend market your feet are bound to get tired. Fortunately, there are plenty of places where you can sit down and get a relaxing foot massage for next to nothing.

We loved the Sunday Night Market located in the center of old city. We were skeptical at first because we'd visited some other "Night Markets" outside of the old city near the river. Those by the river were a waste of time. Same cheap stuff block after block. The Sunday Night Market in the center of town is truly filled with many unique items. All sorts of stuff from delicious handmade candies, to bags made from teak leafs, to hand drawn t-shirt, to all sorts of craft items we never saw anywhere else in Chiang Mai.They also featured a talent show with young dancers...so all in all, it was a nice evening walking around. It was packed with people.
As we was staying at the Tamarind Village who's bamboo arch entrance leads directly to the street. We was conveniently located for this fantastic array of local craft goods. Different to those at the nightly market across town. Market starts at 5pm when the street is close to traffic and runs entire lenght of the street . Gets very busy a few hours later around 7 to 9 pm with wall to wall people. Plenty of photo opportunities.
Our flight arrived in the late afternoon, we dropped our bags as soon as we got to the hotel to hit to the sunday market and it was not disappointed at all... Lots of stands, street food and cheap goods... It only happens on sunday whole day till midnight-1amThings comparing to the night bazaar is a bit cheaper... so make sure to stop by if you were there on sunday

Part of the fun is just walking and looking at all the handicraft items that are on sale. A good place to buy souvenirs and a good place to sample some local dishes, like padthai andsausages. Enjoy!
