The pictures of Sumilon island looks breathtaking! When you first arrive you come to a nice pictureesque sandbank. We where going to stay the day at Maribago bluewater resort, on the other side of the island. On the other side the beach was not nice at all.

Why Sumilon Island is special ?

The Island of Sumilon is located at the southeastern tip of the Municipality of Oslob in the province of Cebu. The island has an area of 24 hectares and has clear waters with varying aquamarine hues and white sand beaches in different areas of the island.

It is the first marine protected area in the Philippines and was created as a marine sanctuary in 1974 under the guidance of the Siliman University Marine Reserve of Dumaguete City in the nearby province of Negros Oriental.

The island is famous throughout the country and internationally for the exceptional beauty of its dive sites. Sumilon has four major dive sites, which are Garden Eel Plaza, Nikki’s Wall, Coral Landscape and Julie’s Rock. The island’s diving sites are famous for their superb visibility, stunning reefs and abundance of varied tropical marine species that provide an ideal and memorable dive. There are occasional sightings of black tip sharks during dives.

What to explore at Sumilon Island?

A popular attraction in Sumilon Island is its sandbar because of its changing shapes and shifting locations around the island depending on the season. Other places of interest in the island are a natural lagoon teeming with high mangroves and natural caves used by fishermen to seek refuge during storms, and a pristine lake.

On the south portion of the island, a lighthouse rests on a protected tree park and beside it is a “baluarte,” a historical watchtower built as part of a warning system to thwart slavers and marauders in the 19th century.

Besides diving, you can also go bird watching, do beach picnics with the family, fishing, hiking, island tours, paddling and trekking.

This exclusive resort is an islet close to the bigger Cebu island. From Cebu City, one can take a bus going to Oslob at the South Bus Terminal even as early as 4 AM. Ask the driver to drop you off at the gate leading to the wharf of the resort. From there, you go down a steep road to the parking lot and office. The pumpboat or banca in the dialect will pick you up at a designated schedule, so I'd suggest you book your day tour in advance. There's an old lighthouse in Sumilon that can be reached by hiking, and there's a lagoon where one can kayak. The cabanas along the shore are perfect for a short nap or for reading a book. When we were there, the waves were big so we didn't do much swimming. As it was a holiday, the line to the lunch buffet was particularly long. But despite the crowd, it was still considerably quiet and secluded.

we paid P2000 each for the trip over there (boats run 8.30am, 10.30am, 12.30am, 2.30pm and 5.30pm... It included a beautiful buffet lunch and the use of the snorkel gear (not including flippers which cost P500 extra!) for P100 you can also rent a locker.Overall the lunch was good, the coral were beautiful (along with the fish) however considering the price i expected to get fins included with the snorkel gear. BRING YOUR OWN - poor quality gear i had to swap mine about 4 times and my Bf 3 which was very frustrating when all we wanted was to swim with the coral and fish.I honestly think if you are planning on snorkelling to have your own gear - the rental gear kept leaking. My Bf and I had to repeatedly return to the snorkel rental area (a long way from where you snorkel the virgin coral)We were warned not to go to Sumilon island just using a local - apparently there have been incidents in the past.

Sumilon Island, a Maribago Bluewater project, is a 10-minute pump-boat ride from Oslob, Cebu, Philippines located at the Northern tip of Cebu province. It has been developed to cater to the adventurous needs of both local and foreign tourists. Since it is an island separated by clear blue waters from the main island of Cebu province, the beach front is great for swimming/snorkel and scuba diving. It is so amazing to see colorful school of fishes abundantly swimming near the shore line. The Lagoon is also another good activity while enjoying both the sea & land breeze. Trekking the entire island will only take about 50 minutes, depending on the pace. The entire island is a sight, with three main islands within its vintage view >>> the islands of mainland Cebu, Siquijor, & Northern Negros. Cost is well proportionate to the enjoyment! Buffet Lunch menu is also well planned..
