Why Sumida Aquarium is special ?

The Sumida Aquarium (すみだ水族館, Sumida Suizokukan) is one of the main attractions of the Tokyo Skytree Town complex that was opened in May 2012 in Tokyo. The moderately sized, and beautifully designed modern aquarium houses over 10,000 sea creatures on the 5th and 6th floors of Tokyo Solamachi, a shopping and entertainment complex at the base of the Tokyo Skytree.

The Sumida Aquarium features the Tokyo Tank that replicates the seas of the Ogasawara Islands listed as a World Heritage Site, an indoor open-pool tank where visitors can watch penguins and fur seals up close, and more attractions that offer an intimate experience with marine life, right in the heart of Tokyo.

What to explore at Sumida Aquarium?

The centerpiece of the aquarium is its 350 thousand liter tank, the largest open indoor tank in Japan, which is home to dozens of penguins and several fur seals. The tank is designed with thick, clear glass walls with almost no visible supports to obscure your view, and allows visitors to see the animals from virtually any angle. The aquarium also features an excellent jellyfish display and research laboratory, as well as tanks representing the habitats around Tokyo Bay, the Izu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands.

How to get to Sumida Aquarium?

The entrance to the Sumida Aquarium is on the 5th floor of the Tokyo Skytree Town, which spans the area between Tokyo Skytree Station (formerly known as Narihirabashi Station) on the Tobu Isesaki Line, and Oshiage Station on the Asakusa Subway Line, Hanzomon Subway Line and Keisei Oshiage Line. Alternatively, it is a 20 minute walk across the Sumida River from Asakusa.

Tokyo Skytree can also be reached by direct buses from Tokyo Station (30 minutes, 520 yen one way, 2 buses/hour), Ueno Station (30 minutes, 220 yen, 4 buses/hour), Tokyo Disney Resort (45-55 minutes, 720 yen, 1 bus/hour) and Haneda Airport (50-70 minutes, 920 yen, 1 bus/hour).

We came across this aquarium by chance on our way to the sky tree as it is in the base of the building. It has a fantastic display of jelly fish . The displays were all excellent and our 8 yr old loved all the Penguins. We were sorry we only had about 40 mins to explore as we had to head to the airport. Fully recommend this for adults and kids as part of a sky tree visit. Visited January 2016

Located at the base of Tokyo Sky Tree the Sumida aquarium offers a more relaxing atmosphere then the over packed mall. It is a bit difficult to find and a little expensive (2500 Yen per person) but has a large variety of marine creatures. It also features seals and penguins. Although on the weekends it is crowded with local families it is still worth a visit if you come to enjoy Sky Tree, it is also a good, interesting way to kill some time until it's your turn to go up. Bear in mind that the ticket counter for the Aquarium is not the same as the one for Sky Tree. Both counters are on the veranda on the forth floor. The Sumida aquarium is a fun way to spend the morning and as such receives the rank of 7 on the Daniel Scale.
