Why Suffolk House Restaurant is special ?

Suffolk House is also called Penang’s first ‘Great House’. Similar to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, it is one of Penang’s most important colonial heritage landmarks. An Anglo-Indian garden house, it is over 200 years old and is located beside the Malaysian-German Society on Jalan Ayer Itam.
Built on an estate owned by Francis Light (founder of the British settlement in Penang), it was in a terrible state of disrepair before fundraising efforts by the State Government, HSBC and the Penang Heritage Trust resulted in its painstaking restoration to its former glory in 2007. The winner of the 2008 Award of Distinction in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation, it looks like a stately old Georgian mansion.

What to explore at Suffolk House Restaurant?

You can visit the house, soak up its unique atmosphere, and wander round rooms lovingly refurnished with original Anglo-Indian antiques. Here, you can also treat yourself to a taste of life in the mansion by savouring lunch, afternoon tea or dinner at the Suffolk House restaurant. Guests can also discover the spirit of the 200-year-old building by taking guided tours that relate its rich and extraordinary history.

The ambience of the great mansion is perfect for parties and weddings, business meetings as well as presentations and luxury product launches.

Cap off your visit at its in-house restaurant, Suffolk House Restaurant. A charming fine-dining eatery richly decorated with period furnishing, it is under the same management as the successful 32 Mansion. Try the classic char-grilled rack of lamb: the tender and succulent meat is served with mint lamb jus and fettuccine pasta with spinach and mushrooms. Also good is the pan-fried cod fillet in basil tomato coulis and garlic aioli: it is served on a bed of Basmati rice with flakes of basil and sautéed pea shoots and carrots.

One of Penang's most important colonial heritage landmarks, Suffolk House stands in Jalan Air Itam. Built on an estate of Captain Francis Light over 200 years ago, restoration works were completed a few years ago to restore the house to its former glory. It now houses a museum with guided tours. There is an in-house restaurant which serves hi-tea and ala-carte meals but prices are on the high side. Worth a visit.

Very classy and relaxing. Great place to go if you are looking for a quiet tea or meal with friends. The atmosphere is perfect for holding great conversations because the staff is attentive but are quiet and do not interrupt. There are only a handful of tables and each table is given a good amount of room so you will not be bothered by other guests and their conversations. It's easy to feel like you are the only people there.
