Tips for you
The Chapel of Transfiguration of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia is the home of the Thomian Choir, the oldest institution within S. Thomas' College. Shrouded in rich history and towering majestically on the highest hillock within the college, this chapel is a unique attraction for enthusiasts of history, architecture, religion and heritage. The cornerstone has been laid by the Bishop of Colombo on October 13, 1923, the Right Reverend Ernest Arthur Copleston. The exterior of this chapel is of Byzantine architecture. An imposing masterpiece of painting by David Paynter occupies the interior of the east wall behind the altar. The most renowned painter of his time, David Paynter completed this masterpiece in 1968 and has cleverly used the workmen and choristers that practised at the time as models in this mural. Another remarkable attribute of this mural is from wherever you look at it the eyes of Christ seem to follow you! Adjoining this you will find the Chapel Garden. It is home to rare and unique trees that are well maintained and carry sign boards indicating name information. This lovely garden is cool even during the hottest season and troops of Toque Mocaque, old-world monkeys endemic to Sri Lanka also seem to concur on this.
