Why St. Augustine’s Church is special ?

The St Augustine Church is part of a monastery founded in 1586 by Spaniards. The facade was originally of Baroque style but the existing facade is more neoclassic dating from 1814.

Three of the best paintings in St Augustine Church are now in the Luis Camoes Museum. These paintings are those of Saint Monica, Saint Augustine's mother, Saint Rita of Cassia and Saint Thomas of Vilanova.

St. Augustine’s Church was built by Italian catholic Augustine priests in 1586 and three years later taken over by Portuguese. It is one of oldest churches of Macau as well as Macau’s first church for English Mass. In 2005, it was included into UNESCO’s World Heritage List as it forms part of the Historic Centre of Macau. St. Augustine’s Church was initially quite simple and was called ''temple'' by Chinese.

I spent two days walking around Macau and really enjoyed getting lost down side streets and getting off the main streets. This church was my favourite find off the main streets. I highly recommend visiting this church, I couldn't believe I was just around the corner from the crowds of Largo de Senado, it was a quiet, peaceful area and I was able to sit and have some peaceful time to prayer and reflect in a stunning colonial area Church.

Make it a point to see some of the older churches in Macau. They span centuries, but still have active congregations. The interiors are always interesting and this one in no exception. The square outside is quiet compared to other more heavily traveled areas of Macau. A nice respite.
