Why Sonobudoyo Museum is special ?

The Sonobudoyo museum was opened in 1935 and is devoted to the study and appreciation of Javanese culture. The building itself, built by the Dutch architect Mr. Kersten in 1935, reflects traditional Javanese architecture. The museum was opened to public in 1935, named as Java Instituut. With a collection of precious artifacts and relics which would impress any archeologist, the Sonobudoyo Museum is a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Home to objects including ceramics from the Neolithic age, statues and bronze articles from the 8th century, and wayangs (shadow puppets), the museum presents a cultural display that will open your mind to the wonders of Javanese culture.

We couldn't see the puppet show, but the museum itself is interesting, although there are few explanations jn English. It is located near the Kraton, so you can go there to escape the hot weather. Staff was very very friendly

I enjoyed our visit to this museum. A variety of historical pieces on display and well labelled; almost everything also translated into English which was helpful. Very interesting, especially to see the Sanskrit. Well exhibited, well-lit, neat and welcoming.

Was the only one at the puppet show! I didn't really understand what was going on (even with the English synopsis they handed me) but it was fun to watch. Actually more fun to watch the side with the puppetmaster and musicians than the side with the actual shadow puppet show. If you arrive early, check out the building next to the theater and see how the puppets are made. Great for a cheap evening in Yogya!
