Booked their snorkeling and fishing tour to the South. For a mere $17 per person you get a whole day tour including lunch. It included a stop at a pearl factory followed by a boat trip around the south islands which had a stop for a bit of fishing (hand lines and pretty small fish but still fun) - they cooked up the tasty catch prior to lunch. Then they made two stops for snorkeling (gear provided) in areas with some pretty nice coral but not a lot of fish. During the stops a crew member picks a bunch of sea urchins which they then clean, open and sell for $1 each as an adjunct to your lunch if you're daring. We don't like sea urchins so we opted out but it was fun to watch the expressions on some folks faces as they tried to choke them down - others loved them and went for seconds or thirds. If you didn't want to snorkel you could also swim over to the really beautiful small beaches located on the islands adjacent to the snorkeling areas and explore a bit. After the snorkeling is lunch. They lived up to the menu in their brochure. The meal wasn't exotic but it was reasonable and no one went away hungry. We then returned to Phu Quoc and they bus you to Sao Beach which is beautiful white sand with a very gentle slope although the shore is fairly littered with seaweed and after about an hour there playing in the surf they bus you back to your hotel. All in all a full and very enjoyable day for a really reasonable price. We booked our tour through a nice young fellow named Khanh who works out of the Seastar Hotel. He was very knowledgeable and helpful without being at all pushy. He waits tables at the hotel and is easily identifiable since he wears a "John's Tours" golf shirt.
We booked the night BBQ & squid fishing trip & also the full day snorkelling trip to the south. We were picked up at the hotel by taxi & taken to the harbour at 4.45pm. We were the only ones on the boat (4 of us) which was fantastic. It was like having a private charter. As soon as we set sail the crew offered beers which was additional to the cost expensive at 30,000 a small can. Then the sea urchins came out 20,000 Dong extra.Fishing went ahead, although we did't catch very much and what we did catch was very small. The fish we caught was cooked for our BBQ. Squid soup followed, then water melon. Not a good meal. There was none of the food mentioned on the itinerary. It was a good job there were only 4 of us as we would have been well hungry. After this we carried on Squid fishing and didn't catch a darn thing. The crew told us we were ready to go back to port. At the time we were unaware of the time, thinking it was much later then it actually was. Should have got back to Port for 9.30 pm. We were back for 8pm.Following this, we spoke to several other couples at our resort about the trips they had booked with John's tours. All were disappointed and felt ripped off. We cancelled our snorkelling trip in favour of SEARAMA. So glad we did.
We booked our tours with Mr. Khanh Quoc Do when staying at Sea Star Resort, as he also works for John's Tours. You can easily contact him a John's Tours in the Duong Dong town office. A courteous young man and fluent in English - the latter being so very helpful in making our bookings and understanding what we were getting into, a snap. We took an interesting motorcyle tour to the north of the island and also a snorkeling/fishing tour to visit 12 southern islands. It was just gorgeous there. I and other travellers appreciated that John's Tours staff did not push us if we simply wanted to lay back and watch others goof off. The staff came forth with all that they said they would doin the brochure. What a gorgeous place Phu Quoc - I can hardly wait to return.
We tried booth the south and north snorkelingtour. But we recommend the north, better snorkeling and a lovely boattrip. If you go there tell the guide to stay a little bit longer at Turtle Island, it´s worth it. The tour also include a delicious fish lunch, the onboard staff even cooked the fish we got.
