Tips for you
I went on this tour today with my wife & 3.5 year old daughter. I was concerned it would be sad & horrid. It was far from this. Yes, the elephants were in captivity, but they seemed happy enough & the people looking after them appeared to really care for them. Apparently these elephants were once used for logging in the north of Thailand, but no longer have jobs (ceased logging in 2009?) We had brief intro to baby elephant (8 years old), who we fed bananas & pineapple to (50baht for small basket). It was so gentle even my 3.5 year old could touch her Then onto ride the big mamas for 30 mins along a track through the jungle to lookout point back down to coast. We finished off with feeding our host elephant with big basket of bananas etc (100baht) & giving her a nice pat & posing for photos All in all, a really nice experience. I'm really pleased I did it despite my original misgivings.
We had a great experience at Siam Safari. The elephants seemed well loved and cared for. We have two young daughters (just two and nine months) and were a bit disappointed that my husband and I had to go on two separate elephants with the girls. My main concern is that I took our two year old and really felt very unsafe at times (mostly when walking downhill). I must stress that it was raining a lot and the plastic ponchos we had slipped on the seats when wet. There is no way that I could have held the umbrella they gave us and my daughter. I couldn't reach the back of the elephants back for leverage, so at times felt I was slipping off the chair and was wildly gripping my girl. the safety bar is quite high and she easily could have slipped under it. In saying all of this, if we had a fine day I think the trek would have been amazing - great views, and informative, friendly hosts - but I certainly wouldn't do it again in the rain!
