Tips for you

  • By 11:30am, the mall tends to be crowded and the lines in the cashiers / checkout counters tend to be really long. So if you don't have the patience, come earlier. avoid shopping on weekend because of the crowd.
    Timming
  • An IT section for all things computers, monitors, phones and ipads. Some of the stores are like a small supermarket for building your own computer.
    Shopping
  • If you stay in Radisson Blu, Bayfront Hotel this mall is just a hop, Marina Mandarin, Marriott, Harold's, Quest it is a 10-15min taxi ride about 130 pesos, enjoy shopping. This mall was located next door to our hotel Radisson Blu which is a fantastic hotel with a walkway to SM.
    Location
  • Do not buy a drink or food before you shop as unlike western shops you are not allowed to enter any shop with any food or drinks.

Great shopping at this local and very popular department store, mega mall giant. SM sells everything from more than just shoes at amazing prices. Travelling to the Philippines and not visiting one of their many, many, many SM's is a sin in a very Catholic country! Wear comfy shoes, or ditch the old ones and buy some new ones at Shoe Mart! More than just shoes, this place sells everything!

SM Mall is huge and extremely noisy! Three or four different sources of what they call Music blast at you while you walk kilometers to find the shop you want. Ayala seems to have learned that too much loud musak turns off the real shoppers, but SM has not. The noise even follows you into restaurants, which all have their doors open, and have their own speakers going. But, if you want to see where young Cebuanos spend their leisure time, go there on a week end afternoon! They happily walk half a day thru the free music and air con. You can see them texting their pals, "See you in SM this pm!" Try counting how few of these kids are carrying bags with anything they bought. If the managers want to encourage real buyers, they might make it easier for those who drive to the Mall to get to the parking entrance. Like, these are the ones who are coming to buy something? Instead, they give top priority of position to jeepney parking and taxi entrances, and make those coming in their own cars go far around to the back to find an entrance and look for the fun spiral up ramp. After, those coming in cars have to pay 20 pesos and find devious ways to get back to the main street. This is not good PR!That said, it has the best hardware store in town, ACE HARDWARE, and a few other shops that Ayala does not offer. But, if you hate noise, never go on Sunday nor close to Christmas time!

I have been coming in SM for many years and though originally I liked it more than Ayala, that is now the reverse. There are many shops, even shops that ayala centre does not have (like a hardware store or a fabric shop) and that is actually the only reason I go there. However, I find the lay-out confusing though and always find it hard to find my way around. Also it is not really a cosy place -definitely not compared to ayala. There is no real nice place to sit and some corners seem a bit deserted and gloomy. The entire place actually comes across a bit dark.Oddly, though almost everywhere in Cebu I can just change euro's into peso's, at the moneychanger in SM that is a more complicated process in which my passport is required. Odd, especially since their rates are not the best.SM is definitely worth a visit, especially for some harder to find merchandise and if you stay in the Radisson Blue hotel that is right across from SM.Compared to Ayala, I find Ayala on a whole a bit more of a pleasant experience, where you wld agree to meet someone, eat, watch people or be watched. SM does not have that
