Tips for you
I love these markets. There is always something to discover. If you are vegetarian or even vegan though be warned you ll only find animals and no plants.
For those unfamiliar with night markets, there are countless shops and outdoor vendors. Literally hundreds of choices of everything from traditional food to shoes or clothing are available as well as souvenirs, local crafts and art, and unique local specialty food. Taiwan is tropical and expect the same type humidity you would find in Miami or Houston except during the winter months, at which time it becomes very comfortable for outdoor activities. The metro is clean and each station has an information desk with persons who can handle basic English to help you. The Taiwanese are very courteous and in the stations there's no pushing or shoving. The local Taiwan beer is surprisingly good. The entire night market scene is something you'll want to experience.
Shilin Night Market is known for its street food and there is now an underground food centre where you can get to sample all the famous street foods in a clean and comfortable environment. Not only does Shilin Night Market have delicious street snacks, there are also many street filled with shops that sells everything from clothes to electronic gadgets. Things are much cheaper here than outside, it is a great place for a shopping spree. Although it is called Shilin Night Market and there is a Shilin MRT station, it is actually just a 10-minute walk from Jiantan MRT station (which is just one stop from Shilin MRT station.
