Why Shi Sheng Claypot Frog Porridge is special ?

Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge

Also known as "Lion City Frog Porridge," the stall has been around since 1995. Owner Ben Tan learnt the recipe from a Malaysian friend and adjusted it to suit Singaporean taste buds.

The signature flavour of their best-seller, kung pao-styled frog ($8, $16 or $22) with plain congee on the side ($2, $3 or $4), can now be found at two other locations in Ang Mo Kio and St James Power Station.

This is the stall that got the most media attention – it is THE FAMOUS Geylang Shi Sheng (Lion City) ‘tian zi zhou’.

What sets Shi Sheng apart from the competition is the trademark oyster sauce used in stir-frying the kung pao frog, which Mr Tan tells us is custom made for the brand. Some may find it a tad too sweet and salty, but the intensity means that the sauce retains its flavour even when drizzled over plain congee

Must try dishes:

Deer Meat Hot Plate

Sesame Oil Chicken (Ma Yiu Ci) $8

Oyster Omelette

Ice Jelly $3

Geylang Lor 9, are known for 2 things. Frog Leg Porridge and Fried Beef Kway Teow. This time around, we went for the Frog Leg Porridge. There used to be an old Chinese saying that if you want to be a good swimmer, you need to eat frog leg. I don't really believe in this, but as long as it is nice, who cares?

Nothing quite hits the spot like a pot of bubbling claypot frog porridge along bustling roads and among an enthusiastic supper crowd at 2am in the morning. Ask for jiang cong claypot frog, or frog with spring onions and ginger, and add on $2 for a pot of plain porridge. Drizzle or drench porridge with the dark savoury sauce that can be found in the claypot of frog legs and other tender parts. Frogs served here have always been fresh and tasty. There may be many others like this one in Geylang but it's the only one friends and I have come back to time and again, perhaps because of its superb location and the stalls it keeps company with. The same coffee shop offers decent orh lua/oyster omelette from another stall, and beef hor fun (thick pieces of rice noodles fried in dark sauce with beef) just across the narrow lane. It makes the trip that much more worth your while, not to mention all that effort that goes into finding a parallel parking lot.
