Why Seongsan Sunrise Peak ( Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak) is special ?
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and for horse riding as well. The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak surrounded by bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is truly a sight to behold.

On the way up Sunrise Peak, there is one last stop for ice cream and water before reaching the top. In this little make-shift shop, there are two women. One sells beverages and snacks and the other one does a very unique trade called pyrography—the process of burning designs on wood with a heated tool. There are Starbucks & Dunkin Donut for you to stop for a cup of coffee while enjoying the views, alsoDrink

Reviews
Seongsan Ilchubong is an extinct volcanic crater and UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site 2000₩ entry fee 180m climb for a great view
“An UNESCO Triple Crown place” It is an archetypal tuff cone formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions upon a shallow seabed about five thousand years ago. Situated on the eastern seaboard of Jeju Island and resembles a gigantic ancient castle, this tuff cone is 182 meters high, has a preserved bowl-like crater. There are two hiking trails to reach the peak , take the white path uphill and the orange path downhill. You just follow the crowd and the signages along the trail. During May and the coming summer, you do not need a jacket or pullover as it will be hot and you will sweat a lot on the climb up. Wear covered sports shoes and a cap / hat. The first part of the hike is the easiest and the least steep. The rest of the path comprises steps of varying steepness. The final stretch gets very steep. Along the hiking trail, there are benches and pavilions to rest. Take a sip of water, rest your aching legs before proceeding . Toilets are available along the way. From the peak, you can see beautiful landscapes of Jeju island and do take a photo with the signage saying you are at Sunrise Peak. It took us 30 minutes to reach the top. The downhill walk was much easier, just follow the wooden stairs meandering its way down. At the bottom, you can go for drinks at the cafeterias.
