Why Sarusawa-ike is special ?

The sight of the pond with the five-storied pagoda of the temple in behind has long been known as one of the most popular sceneries in Nara. Turtles basking in the sun can also be seen here.

A legend says a maid in the imperial palace committed suicide by diving into the pond because of falling out of favor with the emperor in the Nara Period (710-194). Uneme-jinja Shrine located near the pond said to have been establshed to console her soul.

Sarusawa pond probably doesn't merit a visit on its own, but if you're in the area it's a great place to stop and eat lunch. We grabbed a box of persimmon leaf sushi from the nearby Hiraso, and then ate it while sitting on one of the many benches around the pond. There are several drink machines nearby, and the view is beautiful. You can see the pagoda from Kofukuji Temple, and there are lots of turtles.
