Why Sàn Art Laboratory is special ?
Sàn Art (‘san’ meaning ‘platform’) was established in October 2007 in response to the great lack of resources and opportunities concerning contemporary art and culture in Vietnam. In a country with little understanding of contemporary artistic production and its contribution to social and economic progress, artists must be strategically creative in order to be heard. Sàn Art thus endeavors to fill the gap in access and opportunity to engage contemporary ideas of culture via exhibition, lecture, workshop, artist presentations, commissioning of new work, and residency programs, in conjunction with local and international partners.
What to explore at Sàn Art Laboratory?
Situated in separate furnished premises with communal kitchen, nearby ‘Sàn Art’ in Binh Thanh District, ‘Sàn Art Laboratory’ provides 3 artists with an art studio and living quarters for six months each. Successful artists will be granted USD1000 towards production costs and a small living allowance.
The focus of ‘Sàn Art Laboratory’ is artistic production and the sharing of creative ideas. Each participant will be expected to work with a ‘talking partner’ throughout his or her ‘lab session’ (residency period), meeting on a regular basis to discuss the progress of his or her thinking. ‘Talking partners’ will be negotiated between applicant and the Sàn Art Laboratory Advisors and will take into consideration the interests of the applicant. These ‘talking partners’ will ideally be located in Ho Chi Minh City and could include architects, artists, writers, teachers etc.
