“Stunning depth of flavor and fantastic nan” Saffron is hidden down an alley and serves up the best Indian food in Taipei. I'd put it up against any restaurant in town of any kind. Their decor is classy and understated, and they play interesting indian-inspired music. The restaurant is routinely mobbed, so reservations are a must or you may end up elsewhere. They have high chairs and plastic for smaller diners. The bar has a little of everything and they have good wines, but not a vast selection. But of course, the best part is: THE FOOD: Quality is a hallmark of everything they touch. The curries have an amazing complexity and depth of flavor that is astounding. This only happens with painstaking attention to detail, and they do that here. For instance, the butter chicken will hit you with some heat at first, then the burn will slowly settle in. Flavors will dance on your tongue and if you wait you will enjoy the way the flavors change. Then you have no choice but to enjoy another bite. I would say it is like tasting wine, their curries are that complex. The Vegetarian samosas have a little heat, and are slightly crispy on the outside with a savory and flavorful potato stuffing. They also have a chickpea salad that is chock full of fresh flavors. Many times when I have been to other Indian restaurants I have been disappointed in their lamb dishes, chewy, stringy-not good eats! Not so Saffron. The lamb in their dishes is high quality and definitely worth ordering. If you like nan, you will fall in love with this place. The nan is fresh baked to order in a small glassed-off kitchen in the dining area in an authentic Indian oven. It is so flavorful and smells fantastic. Don't bother getting the flavored nans at first, the original will blow you away. My wife makes fun of me for smelling the nan when it comes to the table, but really, it's that good, and pairs excellently with the curry of your choice. To be honest, I haven't really sampled the desserts, but I would be willing to try anything on the menu. As a westerner, I will say some dishes cater to Asian palates, but don't be afraid to experiment!

Probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Taipei. Cosy atmosphere and great service. The curries are amazing and you can't go wrong with any order.
