Why Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is special ?
The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a Balinese Hindu site at the bottom of Monkey Forest Road and populated by cheeky long-tailed macaques. It's a popular site with visitors to Ubud who come to see the monkeys and the temples within the sanctuary.
There are hundreds of monkeys living in and around the monkey forest. You can purchase food for them at the entrance gate but be warned that the monkeys are aggresive opportunists - particularly in their pursuit of food. They will think nothing of climbing on you or raking through your bag in search of something edible.

What to explore at Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary?
There are 3 temples within the forest, Pura Dalem (death temple), the Holy Bathing Temple and Pura Prajapati (funerary or cremation temple). All 3 of these temples are sacred, as is the forest and the monkeys, who are believed to protect the area from evil spirits.

How to get to Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary?
Ubud is about an hour and a half drive from the airport. Taxis are available in the airport. Any travel agent in Denpasar will also be able to get you there. If you stay in a hotel, the management usually provides a shuttle service for a reasonable fee.
The sacred forest is situated at the Monkey Forest Street (shown on the right), which is the main street of Ubud, so you won't miss it.

So depends on how you like them monkeys, you may describe them as either very friendly or very aggressive. But for a tiny girl like me who's in general a bit afraid of such close proximity to wild animals, I felt okay. There are tons and tons of monkeys. You'll see lots of baby monkeys too, and they are super cute. At one point, a monkey started pulling on my skirt asking for food, which I didn't have. And eventually it just goes away, no need to be afraid. At another point, a monkey jumped on my friend, then jumped on me and jumped off. I shrieked for a moment because it was too sudden, but again, it was all okay. By then, I was pretty comfortable with the monkeys. Besides the monkeys, this is basically a forest completely nested inside the city center! How crazy is that... when you are inside, it is almost as though the rest of the world didn't exist as you can't see anything but the forest. There are waterfalls and stream/river.. and the path itself is really beautiful, especially the part with the big dragon bridge. Note you can store your stuff where you purchase the tickets if you're afraid of the monkeys grabbing it. Specifically, they recommended no plastic or paper bags.
Nice place to visit but scary. Too many monkeys, you should be careful for your things. Don't miss it, it's definitely worth a visit.
