Why Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and Visitor Centre is special ?

Royal Selangor is one of the world’s largest pewter manufacturers, founded in 1885 by a young Chinese immigrant named Yong Koon. While it might not sound like a typical attraction, the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and Visitor Centre offers fascinating insight into Malaysia’s cultural heritage through the lens of one of its most prominent crafts.

Guided tours through the facility educate visitors on tin mining, the properties of pewter and methods for transforming the resource into tools and gifts. An onsite pewter museum showcases Yong Koon’s original smithing tools and personal items, as well as some of his original pieces. The 18,000-square-foot (1,672-square-meter) retail space has thousands of Royal Selangor products for sale to take home as gifts or souvenirs.

What to explore at Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and Visitor Centre?

An interactive exhibit of pewter manufacturing, the Royal Selangor Visitor’s Centre is a 40,000sqft attraction housing a series of galleries, a factory and retail store.

Living up to its royal title, the air-conditioned, glass-sided building is gorgeous (think water fountains, warm lighting and polished wooden floors) and well-managed, with free guided tours in several languages (English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese) provided.

Visitors who want to better understand the process of manufacturing pewter can head to the visitor center, which offers two hands-on workshops, the 30-minute School of Hard Knocks, in which participants make a pewter dish using traditional tools and the 60-minute Foundry, in which visitors can create a unique pewter accessory using modern methods.

How to get to Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and Visitor Centre?

it is accessible via a free shuttle from many Kuala Lumpur hotels, a 20-minute taxi ride from the city center or by light rapid transit, which can be taken to the Wangsa Maju station.

Enjoy the traditional art of making a pewter bowl at the Royal Selangor School of Hard Knocks, now at RM60. Oh don't forget to personalise it by stamping the bowl with your initials.

Totally Free. Pleasant tourguide services. However overall, its an average experience on the tour. The tour guides are good and they offer mutiple language touring too. I was very glad that I manage to get a vietnamese tourguide (free service). For those who are interested in pewter production, this will definitely be a beneficial visit. There is also opportunity to try yourself on pewter making experience in the factory which comes with a reasonable charge. Tour ends in the souvenir shop selling all pewtwe items.

The Pewter Factory tour is pretty nice. They provide a guide to take you through the building and let you take pictures of whatever you want. It is really neat seeing the old pewter work and then being able to watch demonstrations of how items are fashioned now. The guide tells you the history of the company and interesting facts about the manufacturing process. They give you a 'welcome drink' (100 Plus soda) so you can see how the pewter cups keep beverages cold. There is also the option of taking part in a workshop to make your own pewterware. At the end of the tour, there is a large gift shop gallery where you can see and buy much of their merchandise. You can take pictures, too, but don't take too many or they'll ask you to stop. Overall, this was a great place to visit and we enjoyed the hour we spent there.
