Why Ramayana Ballet Purawisata is special ?

The Ramayana ballet tells the story of a legendary epic, presented in a series of graceful dance movements accompanied by gamelan music – an orchestra of traditional Javanese instruments. For those who enjoy cultural displays, this is a splendid performance that is not to be missed. The ballet brings together different aspects of traditional Javanese culture with dance, drama, music and costume all on display. Performers do not speak during the dance. The only storyteller comes from the sinden, a female singer who describes the story through Javanese song. The story of Ramayana tells the heroic tale of Prince Rama and his loyal wife Sita. It is an epic story, a metaphor about the triumph of good over evil. The Ramayana has two endings, and these are played alternately on different occasions.

What to explore at Ramayana Ballet Purawisata?

You will not be disappointed to see this excellent performance. They do not only prepare the dance and music, but also the lighting that is set in such a way to be able to describe certain events in that story. The make up of the dancers does not only make them beautiful but it is capable of describing the characters they perform so that spectators easily know the characters even though there is no dialog.

You will see not only the dance but also interesting acts such as fireball game and acrobat. The fireball game is presented when Hanoman that initially would be fired alive turned to be successful in burning Alengkadiraja Kingdom owned by Rahwana. The acrobat is seen when Hanoman fights against Rahwana's followers. The fireball when Shinta would be burned is also interesting to see.

The performance is the highlight here. Lots of colour, fire, comedy and action - and music of course. The food was OK but obviously targets the lowest common denominator so not terribly exciting. Don't do what some of the audience did on our evening - leave early - or what the Buddhist monk did next to us, answer his phone and TALK ON IT FOR TEN MINUTES!! Can't blame the venue for that one but not a great advertisement for the cause I would suggest. Take the kids along if they are with you - it is quite a performance and not too long.

If you are bored of traditional SE Asian dance after 5 mins, you might want to give this a skip. If you enjoy SE Asian music and dance, this 90 minute show has an interesting and fun flavor. Be sure to get a copy of the synopsis so you can understand what is going on during the show. Also, the cheapest tickets are at the side of the stage, the 2nd cheapest are at the corners, the mid-price are in towards the middle with a seat cushion, and the VIP are the right at the front. We thought the 2nd -cheapest were a good bang for your buck.
