Why Pulau Ubin is special ?

Shaped like a boomerang, Pulau Ubin (Granite Island) is situated just off the north-eastern corner of mainland Singapore. The 1020-hectare island was once a cluster of five smaller ones separated by tidal rivers, but the building of bunds for prawn farming has since united these into a single island. Two other islets, Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) and Pulau Sekudu (Frog Island), lie to its south. Ubin is largely a series of undulating, granite hills. In the early days, granite mining supported a few thousand settlers. Much of the original vegetation was cleared for the cultivation of rubber and crops like coffee, pineapple, coconut and jasmine. Today, abandoned granite quarries remain as picturesque relics of Ubin's history, while forests and grasslands have regenerated to cover up the ravages of the past.

It is a nice place for relaxation outside busy Singapore city aside from Sentosa.A must go place for weekend. More people and most of the restaurants open. If you want to avoid rush time, come on weekdays. Less traffic. You can also bring your pet for a short bumber boat trip. Approx. 15 minutes ride from Changi Point ferry to Ubin. The boat ride trip starts when it's 12 passengers. $2.50 per way per person. Charges applicable for infant. Contrast to the busy modern mainland Singapore, back in time 60s, 70s Singapore. Cheap bump boat ride from changi village is an adventure itself. Bicycle rental is cheap too, island is very hot n humid and ready to pour buckets if u venture the island. Is worth taking the bump boat ride across just to eat at the seafood restaurant near the jetty.
