Why Pola Museum of Art is special ?
POLA Museum of Art was opened in 2002 in order to display the extensive private art collection of the company's late owner, Suzuki Tsuneishi.
The museum was built amid a forest of 300 year old beech trees, and although constructed of concrete and glass, it is designed so as not to disrupt the natural environment that surrounds it. To achieve this, the majority of the building is located underground.
The museum features modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics and glassware by mostly Japanese and European artists. In addition to temporary exhibits, the museum displays rotating exhibits drawn from its permanent collection which include works by artists such as Cezanne, Monet, Picasso and Renoir.

What to explore at Pola Museum of Art?
After entering the building, take the escalator down to B1F. This gallery shows a selection of some of Suzuki’s favorite pieces, beginning from when he started to collect all the way through to when he passed away in 2000. One floor below that, there are four more galleries exhibiting oil paintings, glassworks, cosmetic utensils from Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and oriental ceramics. A café and restaurant in the museum give you a chance to take a comfortable rest after bathing in this wonderful shower of art. It is quite cozy sitting near big windows that open to fresh forest green.

How to get to Pola Museum of Art?
The POLA Museum of Art is a short bus ride from Gora Station, the last stop of Hakone Tozan Railways. Take a Hakone Tozan bus bound for Shissei Kaen and get off at the Pola Bijutsukan bus stop (15 minutes, 300 yen, 4-5 buses per hour, covered by the Hakone Free Pass).

Tips for you
Reviews
Impressive set of impressionist art - currently holding a Cezanne retrospective incl. pieces by his contemporaries (Monet, Renoir, Pisarro, Seurat, Gaugin, Modigliani, ...). Permanent set also great!
I went for the Modigliani Exhibition which was awesome! Getting to the museum requires three hours min. The best thing to do is get the HAKONE PASS which will get you from Shinjuku to the museum and back for 50,000 Yen. This is the best deal. I took the Romance car railroad (lest from Shinjuku metro and train station on the first floor) and left at 7:15 in the morning (the office to this railroad is open at 6:30AM and sells tickets you can purchase with your credit card or cash). The Romance Car train is clean and takes about 80 minutes to get to Gora Station. Then you can take a train (on the opposite side of where the Romance train stops) so that is really nice and effortless. You take the train up the hill and see some great things. You are then at the main station, and you can buy a DISCOUNTED TICKET to the Pola museum from the ticket window. Then you take a bus, it is about 300 yen to get to the Pola museum, you pay after you stop, and then the museum is just right across the street. Really expensive coffee and snacks inside, so I brought my own coke and snacks. If you have the Hakone pass you can just wander around Hakone all day! The best restaurants are in Gora Station so you might want to get a hotel there. It is a blast because of the paintings inside- they have a little of everything, especially Impressonists! Modiglionis as well, so make sure you see them. Have fun!
