Why Plum Garden is special ?

Plum Garden was built around the end of 1930s and was the villa that Mr. Youren Yu, a calligraphy master, went to for his summer vacation. With the two Chinese words - Plum Garden written in cursive hand calligraphic style by Mr. Yu on the column next to the entrance, Plum Garden is rated as a designated historical site by the Taipei City Government in 2006. Plum Garden is a unique and well-preserved Japanese architectural masterpiece, and its basement is an air-raid shelter built with RC structures in the early Asia-Pacific War. The external wall is a battlement shaped structure, and with lush and elegant backyard, Plum Garden overlooks into the Beitou Creek, and visitors can literally hear the river flows gently by.

What to explore at Plum Garden?

Plum Garden is a Japanese-style residential building that has witnessed the wars. Built on the sloped river bed, it is divided into the upper and lower layers. The upper layer faces the Jhongshan Road, and the front elevation is on the ground layer built using a Japanese wooden frame structure. The walls are carefully constructed moisture-proof compartment mortar walls and consist of several layers. On top of the wooden frames (the foundation) is the red clay sand layer, and it is decorated with white mortar. Besides the walls, Plum Garden is special as it is constructed on a stone base and is praised for its architectural designs such as fish scale wall panels, black tiles and wooden lattice walls. The lower layer is constructed using reinforced concrete as an air-raid shelter and connects directly to the backyard. This Japanese-style structure and the basement air raid shelter alone with another large air raid shelter located opposite from Plum Garden are rich in historical value.
