Why Phuket Town is special ?

The bustling administrative centre of Phuket is often overlooked in favour of the beaches, but there's a lot to see and do (and spend your money on!) in Phuket City/Town. Having been recently upgraded to city status, Phuket City features an exciting mix of old and new, simple and sophisticated, peaceful and pulsating.

The activity in Phuket City is nearly around the clock. In the early morning, stoic monks take to the streets on their daily alms rounds and the fresh market buzzes with restaurant owners buying ingredients for the day's meals. Non-stop bustle characterises the daytime, and lasts well into the evening. Nights are reserved for enjoying good company, whether at a restaurant, a disco, a quiet bar, or a combination of all three.

What to explore at Phuket Town?

Here you can see the beautiful colonial mansions built in the Sino-Portuguese style by the Chinese tin barons (see Phuket history) over a century ago. In this area there are also plenty of ornate shop houses that are built in the same style as those found in coastal towns all along the Malay Peninsula.

The nightlife in Phuket City is oriented towards local Thais and to a much lesser extent, western expats.

Phuket City is the best place to go for shopping on the island. There are several department stores where you can purchase brand-name goods. You can also find cheaper items at the various markets around town.

Tips for you

  • Try to visit on a Sunday! There is a market that stretches along the entire street that lends it a totally different vibe. Do keep your eyes peeled for that stall! Ask to sample a small piece and they'll be more than willing to oblige.
    Shopping
  • Be extra careful when you cross a road. Beware of pickpocket.
    Safety
  • There you will find a couple of good restaurants where you can enjoy the view with a pleasant meal, as well as a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsada Nupradit, a famous governor of Phuket.
    Service
  • Try Aroon Roti if you're on Thalang road
    Experience
  • The town is about 30 mins away from Patong by car and is easily reached by songthaew (beach-bus) or tuk tuk if you don’t have your own transportation.
    Transportation
  • If you are riding a scooter, be sure to take a map with you due to the grid lanes - there are a lot of one-way streets so easy to get confused when looking for the way back to the beach clusters.

The negative reviews about it being 'Nothing special' have really no clue about what they should be seeing, but perhaps my 'definition' of the Old town is much broader. There are about 4-5 Wat's/Temples here to see in this Old Phuket Town. I will leave it up to the Tripadvisor community to help decide which they vote for. There is also a few Chinese Shrines which are kind of unique to this Old Phuket town. You and google chinese shrines and come across a website phuket101 which will greatly aide you in your knowledge and whereabouts of these shrines.I found the architecture to be quite unique as a whole compared to what I have seen in other parts of Thailand. So basically research! If your expecting to just walk around the centre, where all the buses are, then you will find much... and its kind of pointless. But if you are willing to research a bit and find these treasures, it will be quite interesting and worth it! :)

Lovely architecture, great selection of stores and restaurants. Touristy but not overwhelmingly so. Bought some great Batiq material and finally found Thai fresh rolls to eat. Would not stay in the area but would highly recommend for a few hours

There are some architecturally interesting buildings in old town. If walking with children, beware this is very busy area full of taxis, erratic ally driven cars and tourists. Some interesting antique stores, plenty fabric stores and local cafes providing good services for foreigners. If you want to escape the heat & noise, head to Robinson department store. There is a supermarket, KFC, shoe stores, clothing department, toys, some British brands for kids etc. Had an enjoyable morning there with taxi driver taking us to the biggest Buddha statue. Beware, you will be hastled for business by taxi drivers
