Why Phnom Kampong Trach Cave is special ?

Phnom Kampong Trach is located South Damnak Kantot commune, Kampong Trach district, about 38 kilometers east of Kampot provincial town. It is a rocky mountain with few plants. The site includes a cave at the foot of the mountain, as well a number of small mountain wells that local people of Cambodian, Chinese and Vietnamese descent use for worship.

One of mountain wells is 30 meters in diameter, and its soil is seven different colors. Several smaller wells have artistic stones that look like animals and other objects. From this large well, there is a cave way to Veal Srey Mouy Roy and Thea Dos wells, which were used by filmmakers in the 1970s.

There is a Chinese-Vietnamese pagoda at foot of the mountain, and a Khmer pagoda in front of the entrance to the cave. The monk at the pagoda and the monastery committee are working together to preserve the cave.

What to explore at Phnom Kampong Trach Cave?

From the turn it is another 20 min drive, before you see the cave entrance to your right. The limestone caves are quite big and there are many children waiting to guide you. Inside of the cave you find a big reclining Buddha as well as some smaller statues. Very interesting is also the purple earth.

There is also a small lake inside the cave (swimming cave - ask the kids where to go since it is quite difficult to find), located about 10 min drive from the main cave, following the train tracks.

How to get to Phnom Kampong Trach Cave?

From Kampot take the Road No 33 towards Kep, bear left at the statue of a white horse and follow to Kampong Trach. It is a nice road trip to Kampong Trach as you pass through picturesque countryside. A motor with driver from Kampong Trach to Wat Krishna costs around US$3-5.

While the Caves themselves may not be the most impressive what is interesting is the area and the Children who offer flash-lights and their Guide services. I simply hired a tuk tuk for the afternoon to travel about the area. Driving to the Caves is interesting enough but upon arriving I was surrounded by no less than 5 smiling faces, holding flash lights and asking which one I might hire as my personal guide. I couldn't resist and took them all along from the oldest perhaps 14 to the youngest possibly 6. And while they made it fun they also make it very interesting ! It cost around a dollar to enter the area and the children while optional are well worth a dollar each. And you may want to stop and get a special blessing from the elder sitting just outside one cave area. A small donation is acceptable and can't hurt to have good wishes bestowed upon you. Most importantly, take water or a snack along as there is no place to buy and I suggest mosquito spray.
