Why Parapat is special ?
Parapat is a small town in North Sumatra province on the edge of Lake Toba, on the Uluan Peninsula where it forms the narrowest eastern link to Samosir Island. Parapat is 176km from Medan and can be reached in 4 hours by bus. It is the primary transit point by ferry for visitors going to Samosir Island, and connected via Trans-Sumatran Highway to Pematang Siantar by a 48 km road. Dody Administratively it is part of Simalungun Regency. Being the mainland departure point for Danau Toba (Lake Toba), Parapat has everything a transiting tourist needs, from transport, lodging to supplies.
What to explore at Parapat?
The climate in Parapat is cool and dry, making Parapat an ideal place to relax. Many hotels, bungalows, villas, rest-houses welcome visitors. Small shops sell souvenirs such as Ulos (local woven cloths) and specific fruits locally grown.
The town of Parapat is the main tourist resort and lies on the very shore of Lake Toba. This lake is about 50 miles long and 16 miles across, with a depth of about 1,400 feet.
In Parapat live Batak Toba and Batak Simalungun tribes, and are happy and easy going people. They are known for their lively and sentimental love songs.

The ferry dock of Parapat is the major access point for the Samosir island. From there, jump in a local mini-van (Rp 2,000) towards the Parapat bus station. From there you can reach nearly all the big cities in Sumatra and even Java.
