Panwa Beach is not very highly ranked amongst most of the other Phuket beaches. It is a narrow strip of sand that is rocky and uninviting for sunbathing.

Why Panwa Beach is special ?

Panwa Beach, this south-westerly facing beach - named after a nearby Muslim village - has managed to remain exactly the same as it has been for years in spite of intensive urbanization in the direct area. Panwa beach is also known as Khao Kat Beach, is not a swimming beach, and yet has the charm of these remote bays not many would take the time to explore while visiting Phuket. Located on a east coast cape but facing west, the whole area is peppered with luxury villas and few resorts, a great alternative to relax away from west coast crowded spots.

What to explore at Panwa Beach?

There are absolutely no water activities of any kind at Cape Panwa Beach. The only thing to really do there is look at the islands and maybe grab a drink or a bite to eat across the road. However, Panwa Beach is still tranquil and a haven for people who like peace and quiet. Khao Khat is eight kilometres east of Phuket Town and covers the west coast of Cape Panwa.

Its sand is rather rough and the water shallow but it's certainly very scenic with views out across Chalong Bay and Lone Island. Luxury villas and condominiums line almost the entire beach but dotted in between are fishermen's huts and at the far west end of the beach there is a mangrove swamp.

How to get to Panwa Beach?

Drive out from Phuket Town along Sakadit Road. At the third traffic light turn right and then left at the traffic circle. Alternatively, if you continue on along Sakadit Road take the next turn right and you will eventually come to the beach road.

Continue on for one kilometer and you will see the beach. However, access to Panwa Beach (Khao Khat) is not possible until near the far end where you will see a sign saying 'Bech Bar' (they mean 'Beach Bar').

You can go down here or at another track some 150 meters further on but at this one you should park on the main road.

  • If you get bored, you can always go visit the Phuket Aquarium.
    Things nearby
  • Head towards Cape Panwa and follow the signs first for the Novotel then for 'Khao Khad Views Tower' (Khao Khad is a nearby village). There is ample parking here as well as cafés and shops.
    Things nearby
  • Panwa beach and its surrounding is not your usual tropical holiday destination, but once you drive there on a nice day you will see a side of Phuket island not many take the time to enjoy.
    Experience
  • You can rent a long tail boat to visit Koh Lone just a few minutes ride across the bay. During high season a small wooden shack sells few beach accesories.
