Why NYK Hikawamaru Exhibits is special ?
The NYK Maritime Museum is inside the Yokohama NYK Building, which was constructed as NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha)’s Yokohama branch in 1936. This building has great historical value itself. On the first floor is the museum, where the exhibition rooms introduce the history of NYK alongside the development of modern Japan, together with valuable materials and models of successive luxury liners and cargo ships.
The exhibition area is divided chronologically into eight zones, showing the history of NYK from before the establishment of the company at the time when Japan opened up to the world during the last days of the Shogunate, right up until the present day.

Tips for you
My husband and I are in the shipping business and are always interested in Maritime Museums and of course ships, so these two places were on our agenda to visit. Very interesting museum about the history of NYK even though most in Japanese lots of information was available in English and films had subtitles. Staff were also very friendly. Entrance can be bought for both NYK museum and Hikawamaru ship at a discounted price. Upon entrance to the museum the attendant gave us a token to get a free drink in the café/sitting room and also a welcome souvenier. We visited the Hikawamaru ship later in the day as it was opposite our hotel. This was lovely to see and spend the time watching the movie in the lobby when you first arrive. It gives you a good incite of the history of the ship.
