Why Ngoc Mai (Ocean Bar & Grill) is special ?

Ngoc Mai takes up the corner plot, instantly recognisable by crooked tables overflowing with empty plates, La Rue bottles and satiated Vietnamese beach dogs SNORING beneath them.

The family running Ngoc Mai have got service and warm family hospitality licked. Free mineral water and peanuts are swiftly offered before a tour of the day’s catch, where you are expected to help pick out and oversee the weighing, and if you fancy it, the prep. The menu is cheap as chips and kids are king. The menu is a healthy mix of herb-infused marinades with the choice of steamed or grilled on the fan assisted barbecue

You’ll need to select each course from buckets of live clams, oysters, scallops and fish, and if you grab a deckchair, you’ll miss out on the entertaining kitchen action and convivial atmosphere.

Must try dishes:

Bright orange tamarind crab,

The freshest lemongrass and chilli oysters,

Succulent snapper smoked in banana leaf,

Steamed squid and the CLAMS!

Dont get me wrong, it is an okay place to eat. And i guess you can buy a decent bottle of wine here and nothing wrong with the staff, but in the end the food counts...after i traveled three weeks in vietnam and only eaten in local places , i must say the serve decent spring roles, the mango dip was okay; I had the seafood plater and i had so great fish on vietnamese coastline.. this was just average... the fish was fresh , so nothing to complain.. but the all had a lack of taste... the lemongrass toping.. no taste at all... the shrimps neither garlic or chili... like no real spices at all...combined with the price they ask for , this is a spot i will not go to cos of other better options... if you happen to be on the street and its just the closest, then it probably an okay chioce...

Looking for a varied menu of asianand western food, we found OceanBar and Grill on TA and decided to give it ago. We were greeted by really polite and friendly staff, and the owner who came and joined us at the end of the meal. The food was terrific (steaks, stir fry, authentic fish dishes) were all of a good quality. As were the selection of wines as the restaurant has its own winestore. All in all a great evening and we've already booked to go the owners new place, Tango, tomorrow eve.
