Why Museum Benteng Vredeburg is special ?
Vredeburg Fort was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in 1760, based on the request from Dutch government, Nicolas Harting. The construction was first functioned as a fort in rectangle form. Each corner of the building had a guard post called seleka or bastion which was given a name; Jayawisesa (northwest corner), Jayapurusa (northeast corner, Jayaprakosaning (southwest corner), and Jayaprayitna (southeast corner).
In 1762, Nicolas Harting was replaced by W.H. Ossenberch who later on, persuaded Sultan to construct the fort permanently. Sultan granted the request and the construction began in 1767 under the supervision of Ir. Frans Haak, the Dutch expert of construction. The construction was finally finished in 1787. The building was named Rustenberg that means “rest fort”. In 1867, earthquake in Yogyakarta tore down Rustenberg Fort. The building was renovated and the name was changed into Vredeburg fort that means “peace fort”. The name is used until today.
Today, the function of the fort becomes National Struggle Monument that is called Vredeburg Fort Museum. It was officially launched on November 23, 1992. The museum often functions as a place to hold art and culture activities.

In the Museum of Vredeburg Fort has many antiquities from the Netherland era. There, you will also see dioramas from before Indonesia’s proclamation era until New Orde or Orde Baru era. Selain museum yang bernilai sejarah tinggi juga menarik, Benteng Vredeburg juga kerap menjadi venue pameran-pameran kesenian maupun festival makanan/jajanan/kuliner. Tempat asyik untuk tamasya.
I've been to history museums in the past where the exhibits were done in such a way to capture your interest. I've also been to interesting forts where the exhibits are done in such a way that it is fun (some of the forts in Singapore for example). This museum is BORING. Unless you are fanatic about Indonesian history, the exhibits are done in as boring , dry and academic as possible. Not recommended.
It will be a good tourism attraction if they provide more information about the place, so we'll know the history of every building inside the fortress.
To be honest, there's nothing interesting about the fort but... in front of it, there are many benches where the locals like to sit. See an interesting person there? Walk towards the traffic light near the intersection, find the girls who sell flowers, buy one, go back to that person, give the flower to them and talk. Good luck! I made one friend there, she's a music teacher. I can't wait to meet her again the next time I visit Jogja again.
If you like history and if you're Dutch (like me) you'll love this place! It's located on a strategic place (of course) near the kraton and still very much intact! This former Dutch fort was used to keep an eye on the Sultans and to 'protect' him. It's not a big place but worth the money (and you don't pay that much entrance fee anyway). If you walk to the back you can go up the defense walls and walk almost completely around.
