Why Mountain KeeLung is special ?
Keelung Mountain (基隆山), at a modest 588 meters above sea level, is within walking distance of Jiufen Old Street (九份老街). Both because of its shape and having the same pronunciation in Chinese, the mountain is also called Chicken-cage Mountain, or “Jilong Shan” (雞籠山). In fact, it is actually an extinct volcano with a panoramic view on top. If you'd like to grab some fresh air and sunshine after visiting Jiufen Old Street, the proximity of Keelung Mountain makes it your best choice. It takes about 1 hour to reach the summit from the trail entrance. After a bit of hard work, you will have the chance to enjoy the incredible coastal view of Northern Taiwan in front of a radiant sunset.
What to explore at Mountain KeeLung?
Arriving at Jioufen by bus, most people will get off near the Old Street stop. Follow the road a bit further up and you'll find a white stone marker denoting the trailhead for the Keelung Mountain trail by the left side of the road.
A pregnant lady, a bird cage and King Kong. Yes, those are the different illusions you can get from a single mountain, KeeLung.
588m above sea level, Mt KeeLung is an extinct volcano with a panoramic top view. The view from the foot of the mountain is picturesque but if you want a breath-taking view, take a 45 minutes hike to the top.
The trail consists mostly of a series of very long and steep cobblestone steps cut into the side of the hill with the occasional pavilion for climbers to rest their legs. The view, however, is tremendous.
How to get to Mountain KeeLung?
From Taipei, take the train north to Ruifang Station. After exiting the station, cross the street to the bus stop next to the Wellcome Supermarket and board the Keelung Transit bus towards Jiufen.
