Why Mount Bromo is special ?
Mount Bromo which stands tall at 2329 m is one of the most iconic mountain in Indonesia. It beckons majestically despite having the entire top blown off and with a crater inside that keeps spewing off white sulphurous smoke. Mount Bromo is still one of the most active volcanoes in the world and there are areas that are blocked off from tourists due to its imminent danger. It sits inside the massive Tengger caldera (volcanic crater with diameter approximately 10km), surrounded by the Laut Pasir (sea of sand) of fine volcanic sand. This breathtaking and ethereal landscape have been swooned by many travelers alike.
What to explore at Mount Bromo?
Watch the sunrise: This is the main reason people come to Bromo. As the night begins to fade and the sun’s light slowly unveils the sights of striking mountains and volcanic peaks, the magical beauty and splendor of the view is truly unforgettable.
Climb the Bromo Crater: After walking or horse-riding through the plain, one must visit the crater of Bromo. To reach the top of the crater you have to climb a steep ascension of 245 stairs. It’s a bit of a hassle as you have to walk them alongside hundreds of others, in addition to the fact that one can barely see the stairs as they are covered almost completely by volcanic ash.
Drive on the Sea of Sand: Those who love to add some road warrior-like adventure to their trip should surely try this challenge. Hire a jeep and politely ask your chauffeur to let you drive the car. With the four-wheeler in your control, you can drive through the thick and tricky sea of sand and feel invincible as you look upon the dunes with their moon-like appearance.
How to get to Mount Bromo?
A Railway station exists in Probolinggo. It is around 10km from Probolinggo Train Station to Probolinggo Bus Terminal and you can use a Bemo. Lookup picture from Terminal to avoid scam (stop at hotel/travel agency). Outside Probllinggo Bus Station you can take a Bemo to Cemoro Lawang for IDR30,000 (Nov 2013). The Bemos drop you off in the village at the T-Crossing; one way goes to Cafe Lawa, the other way to Cemera Indiah Hotel. It takes 1.5h to drive to from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang. Before you reach the Cemoro Lawang the Bemo stops and you have to pay Park Entrance Fee at a checkpoint.

Tips for you
At 3am, took a 4wd jeep ride up to the Penanjakan Peak, which is the highest point to view sunrise together with a fantastic view of the Bromo Crater. It was quite crowded and chilly at about 4 plus. So fortunately we went early and our guide managed to get an excellent spot for us. Sunrise is aprox at 5:15am. After enjoying the sunrise and beautiful view of the crater, its time to head down to the Sea of Sands which leads to the crater. At the Sea of Sands, its about a 2km walk to the crater, or there is a choice of pony rides. A mask would be very useful from all the sand and dust. After a short climb up to the crater, you get to walk along the top and enjoy the different angles and views, definitely a place for many photographs !
From sunrise to sunset. Nice place to take photos. You can catch the moon here. The view from the bottom of its is already cool yet you can ride a horse or trail through the peak where there is a crater there.
