Why Mercante is special ?

Mercante will be a dream come true: the one where you’re ambling down an ancient hutong and chance upon a softly lit restaurant serving comforting Italian cuisine.

With just a couple dozen seats, a meal at this restaurant feels like dinner at a friend’s house – a friend with an easy manner, impeccable taste and mad kitchen skills. The bruschetta toppings of fresh ricotta, olive pate and a red and yellow pepper sauce are pleasant, but if you’re on a budget, skip straight to pasta and mains. The chef is from Bologna, so the the homey flavored tagliatelle with bolognese ragú are a must have dish. The tender organic beef fillet accompanied by a baked corn pie and small onions stands out as an exceptional deal. The salmon fillet is also good value, with a flaky skin that gave way to ruby hunks of flesh.

Pastas in the hutongs, who would've thought. Perfect homey spot for homey Italian food. The homemade pasta is the best in Beijing.

Fresh ingredients- try their beef fillet, potatoe & pork belly tortelli, and their second to last dessert on the menu (coffee & rum flavored ice cream with bread) simply amazing!

Il Mercante has the best panna cotta in Beijing. This tasty treat is served with a tart raspberry and basalmic vinegar sauce. Wow.

Tucked away in the Hutongs in Dongcheng District is a tiny Italian restaurant owned and run by an Italian family. It is a very tiny restaurant with 2 tables outside and a handful of tables inside. The ambiance and quaintness is wonderful and adds to the culinary experience. The simple but exquisite menu is taste sensation after taste sensation. An excellent wine list offers lovely wines to cleanse the palette and add to a lovely meal. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, speaking English, Manderin and of course Italian. Nothing was too much for them, with a young daughter requesting something not on the menu,it was no problem for them to accomodate to please her.The pumpkin tortellini was my favourite but it was hard to just select one as all the dishes had that wow factor. We went for lunch but I have enjoyed dinner there previously which was fantastic as well and offers a broader menu.Just an amazing culinary experience, would highly recommend this to everyone!Just one thing it is tucked away off the main road so make sure have clear directions for taxi driver, there is a train station very close as well.Last bit of advice..pre book..010-84025098Enjoy...

We have been here so many times and keep coming back for more. Simple, delicious, home style Italian food and very affordable -- a combination which is very rare to find in Beijing when it comes to Western food. The location in the hutong is also amazing. The Italian owner is very passionate about his food and if it's not too busy he will take his time to tell you all about it. Now they get busier they hired local staff -- which is always tricky for Western restaurants -- but we had great meals even when the owners were not there. In the 20+ times we've been, there was only once a hiccup in the service, but this was swiftly corrected by the owner. If you buy one bottle there, you can bring another yourself without paying corkage, ideal if you're with a group.I realize this post almost sounds like advertisement, but pls check out my other posts and see I'm hard to please.

Excellent "home style" and traditional Italian food. A nice selection of Italian Beer to select from. Wine and beer could have been colder, however after being iced for a while all was good. Service was good and the restaurant was fully booked at the time. Not easy to find, however woth the effort.
