Why Menjangan Island is special ?

Menjangan Island, surrounded by unspoilt white sandy beaches, stunning coral reefs, and enchanting underwater, is a perfect definition of what natural beauty is all about. The word "Menjangan" in the Javanese language means "Deer". According to Wikipedia, the name was given by the local population who observed wild deer herds swimming to the island every spring covering a distance of approx 1.2 miles.

This small island is actually where diving first started seriously on Bali back in about 1978 under the sponsorship of the Indonesian Navy, when it arranged a get-together of the country’s main diving clubs -Possi, Ganesha, Nusantara, and Trisakti. That get-together led to Menjangan establishing itself as the premier international dive location in Bali and many of the attendees went on to become the pioneers of commercial dive operations across Indonesia.

What to explore at Menjangan Island?

The island is surrounded by hectares of beautiful coral reef gardens with a very diverse eco biology, which makes it a favorite destination for snorkelers as well as divers. The good drop-offs on Menjangan’s south side is a popular spot for local people and tourists wishing to dive for a variety of fish and coral reef exploration. There are no dangerous currents to contend with in this area.

Apart from a high diversity of coral species and colorful, tropical fish there are also many kinds of sea birds and shorebirds frequenting the island. Also the Hawkesbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is sighted frequently in the area.

We organised our snorkelling trip to the island through Lovinia tours. The company came to pick us up early from Nusa dua for the 3 hour journey to the island. When we arrived we went snorkelling in two different locations- the first had an abundance of fish, clown, puffer and the poisonous stone fish was pointed out by our guide. The second location was also lovely however a large number of small jellyfish with a nippy sting! I would recommend wearing long sleeves/ rash vest when swimming there. On the island itself are a large number of deer and a beautiful temple. The only downside is the huge amount of rubbish both on the island and in the water-you spend half your time snorkelling dodging it! If the spot was cleared up a bit, it would be a lovely place!
